The history of French onion soup. During W. W. I The french civilians were finding supplies of evey day groceries becoming more & more scarce the longer the war loomed on. Necessity being the mother of invention, new recipes like this one popped up occasionally with simple and inexpensive ingredients. He even mentions using stale bread would be o. k and that's b/c the original recipe from the early 1900's was stale bread or even croutons, a few onions, and the delicacy of the dish, a thin slice of cheese. If that's all you had, then onion soup is what you ate. FOR DAYS ON END. Finally, when the war ended and foriegn soldiers returned home to places like New York & Chicago. the recipe became more of a finer upscale type of soup. like they eat in France. When in reality, it was a sad dish served out of necessity to feed the hungry french people. To this day it's not a soup the French are particularly fond of and you won't find it on many menus in Paris.

You re better than my prof in my current school, she teach us but also treat us like coworkers. she is good in cooking but when it comes to teaching, she always had to say that you should know better when it comes to this and that. like wth? I ve enrolled to a school to learn and to be taught. not to hear words that are quite uninformative and makes fool on anyone when he/she had sees mistakes, laughs & jokes about it and tells the whole class. am just quite bothered by her attitude

There was one a little boy who really liked the water, and wanted to swim like a little fish. This guy looks like a story teller, because i almost fell asleep, first he does look like Ali and second he looks like the typical french cook guy. No Jamie Oliver, i was looking for him throughout the entire vid. Just disappointing like i have thought.

I know this is an older video, but I have to say, this is still the best french onion soup I have eaten in my area. I'm enjoying making it again today. Thank you for your passion for cooking.

I remember ordering this in a french restaurant misreading and thinking it was a lamb soup, and i was thinking by myself damn, these french lambs sure taste strong! .

I know he says use apple cider vinegar, but don't. Use white wine or don't make it, in my opinion, having just made this with apple cider vinegar.
