Soei ) is honestly one of my favorite, and one of the best restaurants in all of Bangkok, if the not the world. Soei ) is a famous restaurant in Bangkok thats especially known for its strong use of flavors - I think everything on the menu is extremely flavorful - sour, spicy, herb driven, flavors like that. So if you love strong flavors, youre going to probably love eating at Soei ) as much as I did. PSoei, who is the owner and the chef of the restaurant, was a former sports player. Walk into the restaurant and youll immediately be greeted by photos of sports teams posted around the entire sides of the kitchen. One of the most famous Thai dishes on the menu at Soei ) is kaem pla too tod, or fried mackerel fish cheeks. Really they were a bit more like entire fish faces, deep fried to a crisp and seasoned with little more than fried garlic and a pinch of salt. The kaem pla too tod ) is so popular, that you cant actually order them off the menu, and instead you have to call ahead and order them on the phone - Ying called them at 10 am before we came to eat for lunch, and reserved out plate. They were sensationally good, almost an unbelievable snack. Also for an appetizer or snack type of a dish we got goong chae nam pla, which is a common Thai dish, kind of like the Thai version of shrimp ceviche. Normally goong chae nam pla ) is just marinated in lime juice, chilies, and garlic, but at Soei Restaurant, they add in a ton of wasabi to kick up the flavors a couple notches. It was sensationally delicious - the burn went all the way up my nose, and it was incredible. For the main dishes, first we ordered tom yum pla too. The tom yum pla too ) was made with mackerel, and what I really loved about it was the glorious amount of holy basil which they added. It was incredibly spicy with chilies, very sour with lime juice, and then that hit of holy basil gave the soup a wonderful herb earthy flavor. For curry we ordered chu chee pla too, a Thai curry made with mackerel fish, in a spice flavored coconut milk based sauce. Finally for the trophy dish of our meal, we ordered pla goong pao. A Thai pla is sort of like a salad, but more of a deluxe salad, a traditional form of a Thai salad. For this recipe they used jumbo freshwater prawns, first grilled up, and then sliced in half like butterfly cut. They were then anointed in a thick layer of sliced lemongrass, chilies, garlic, shallots, and tomatoes, dressed in lime juice, fish sauce, and sugar, and then finally sprinkled with sweet basil leaves. It was one of the most amazing Thai dishes Ive eaten in a very long time. Soei ) is doing an incredible job of making Thai food the right way - using delicious ingredients and not holding back on ferocious flavors. When I ate here, luckily it wasnt too busy, but sometimes the restaurant can be so busy that you have to wait for your food for 2 - 3 hours because PSoei is the only one who cooks. So its best to eat here on off meal peak hours, and on weekdays if you can. Address: Thanon Setsiri, Sam Sen Nai, Phaya Thai, Bangkok, Thailand

The Food Ranger's dad here. Thank you Mark for recommending Soei. Trevor's mom & I were in Bangkok for 1 day on Christmas day and came here to eat based on your thoughts. It was unbelievable The Mackerel heads were great and a fun experience. The Shrimp ceviche was the spiciest/hottest dish I've ever had and the Shrimp salad was arguably the best thing I've ever eaten The Soft Shell Crab curry was fabulous too. I would not go back to Bangkok without going to this restaurant again. FYI: Our tuck tuck driver got lost 3 times trying to find Soei. He eventually had to pull over and ask another driver for help. Persistence pays off though. Obviously he did find it and it was worth the trip

Mark, you must make little stickers showing different levels of your absorption/ foodgasm, and wherever you go, ask the owners if you can leave your stickers prominently displayed. Mark was here, he fainted in ecstasy. Seriously, not kidding. There are two really funny guys, but also serious food lovers, Highway On My Plate, NDTV, India, who do just that, travelling all over the small highway food stops in India, behaving crazily in a good way, and leaving their stickers, much to the delight and consternation of the restaurant owners People love them and you know you are loved, too, for your delightful zaniness and warmth

Hi Mark I just had dinner a few hours ago at Soei because of your video. I wanted to let you know that they now have a separate menu that lists only the items YOU recommended on your blog post about Soei. They also have a big picture book of lots of dishes so foreigners can point and order. I ordered almost everything you recommended on your blog including the dessert drink that Ying liked. Everything was so wonderful, so thank you for making such great videos that are informative, useful and fun to watch

Hi MarkThank you for letting us know about the Soei Restaurant. I went with my Thai friends last month. They were like me, engrossed with the food that we all stopped talking because we were so focused in the food. A place you should not miss. According to my Thai friends, the food tasted like traditional Thai food 50 years ago. Thanks again Mark. Just a bit difficult getting there. Took a Tuk Tuk from Ari MRT station. The driver almost got lost. Worth all trouble though.

This video came up on my feed, and it was a wonderful throwback. And I get to see that signature foodgasm face you make. Been wondering why you never do so in the newer videos. The series in Switzerland, the ones in Israel and Palestine, and the recent Japan series, you never did the face you did in this video. People commented that you've toned it down, but in my opinion, it's cause none of their cuisine comes close to Thai food, or SE Asian food in general.

Ying and you should visit Bangladesh sometime Mark. Although our cuisine is Bengali, but it differs from Indian West Bengal. Bangladeshi cuisine is influenced by Mughals as well as has Burmese touch to it. In short, our food (especially Southern Bangladeshi cuisine) is spicy, hot and herbaceous I think you guys will thoroughly enjoy them. Besides, I'd love to show you guys around. Keep up the awesome work.

Total respect for following your passion with such passion. Great videos - and the headswing etc has now become part of our family routine at the dinner table (provided the food makes the grade. After years away from Thailand, we are now on our second visit this year and are hoping to go to Soei this time around. Btw, where did you get your Mai Pet, Mai Gin t-shirt?

Dude, you're the real deal. This joint is not for a fainted heart. All the food is extremely strong-flavor and spicy. Many of my friends (I'm a Thai) can't finish the meal here because it's too hot. But judging from the writing on your t-shirt, this place is heaven for you (and me. But I doubt foreigners would enjoy this place. It's like a secret boss of Thai food.
