Ban Rak Thai (, Thailand - Welcome to Ban Rak Thai, a gorgeous village high in the mountains of Mae Hong Son ( ) province in Northern Thailand. The village has a lot of history where KMT fighters fled Yunnan, China and settled in this village. They brought with them their culture, Yunnanese tea, and Chinese food. Today, they village feels almost exactly like you re in China, and in a spectacular location, it s a popular place to visit. Today we re going to explore Ban Rak Thai ( ) and especially go on the ultimate Chinese food tour! Kuay Teow Yunnan Pa Nuai ( - First thing to eat for breakfast is a bowl of Yunnanese yellow noodles. Aunty mixes them with sauces, chili oil, and garlic, gives them a hand toss. They are really tasted, highly recommended when you re in Ban Rak Thai. Total price - 110 THB ( 3. 68) LiXian Restaurant - Next we headed to the small and friendly LiXian Restaurant where the owner makes a number of local Thai and Chinese dishes. One of the foods you have to eat when you re in Ban Rak Thai ( ) is fresh tea leaf salad. She chops up the tea leaves, mixes it with chicken and seasoning and stirs it up. The result is a flavorful, green tasting, herbal salad that has so many flavors going on. As I mentioned in the video, it was a little too sweet, so next time I d ask for no sugar, but it was extremely delicious. Total price - 220 THB ( 7. 36) Jee Lee Hot Pot ( - This ancient looking family run hot pot restaurant is one of the best of the best restaurants in Ban Rak Thai (. I would not go to Ban Rak Thai ( ) without eating here, it s a legendary culinary staple. They have a huge menu of all sorts of Yunnanese Chinese food, but one of their signature dishes is a hot pot that includes meat rolls, chicken, pork bones, taro, Yunnanese ham - basically any protein you name it, it s in there. It was delicious, warming, and rich. Total price - 840 THB ( 28. 10) Dew Drop meat - 200 THB ( 6. 69) - Finally to end this Chinese street food tour in Ban Rak Thai (, I wasn t going to leave without trying dew drop pork. The strips of pork literally hang and collect the morning dew for 30 days to age and preserve the meat. The result is a bacon / ham / dry aged taste that is spectacularly delicious. This small shop was right in the center square of Ban Rak Thai, and it s more of a shop than a restaurant, but they will serve you if you show up and buy some dew drop! Marcus: My god! The village looks incredible and enchanting! Thank you so much Mark for showcasing this amazing place in Thailand! I've been to Thailand before (albeit only Bangkok) and hope to one day return to the country so I can visit this places.

this kuomintang village really looks like the rural village in Yunnan like Dali. thus, we can call Ban Rak Thai as mini Yunnan. anyhow, it also reminds me of the one along the route to Doi Angkhang in Chiang Mai back in 2010. the community also established a homestay and a house display for the tourists as well as a rest stop selling several kinds of food like roasted potatoes and ginger tea. they even stir-fried the vine as well as the braised pork trotter in vinegar which was the local delicacy there. there are several other tea plantations established by the KMT including Mae Salong in Chiang Rai.

Food looks great. The hotpot was very close to Beijing Style. My grandpa was in Born in 1931 when KMT still ruled the whole China. He told me KMT lost the civil war because they were extremely corrupt. The soldiers a salary were stolen by the officers and they had to loot the normal hardworking ppl.

Hi Mark, Ying, and Micah! Looks like a beautiful morning! For me, who cannot eat but a couple of noodles, the veggie dish looks so appealing! In fact, most dishes look as if you can eat them without. This is so appealing about the Thai food culture! Blessings to you!
