One day during my trip to Mombasa, Kenya, I had a chance to hang out with Chef Ali Mandhry, a local from Mombasa, host of a variety of tv shows, writer, and an all around amazing guy to hang out with and eat with We first stopped off at Mama mbaazi, a lady who sells Mombasa style pigeon peas in coconut milk to be eaten with mahamri. We saved it for later when we returned to the house, but it was excellent, and amazing combination. We then continued on to the main market in downtown Mombasa, a bustling fruits and vegetables market, full of friendly vendors, and all the ingredients you need to cook Kenyan Swahili food - which is a mix of Arabian, Indian, and local dishes. The main dish that we bought all the ingredients for was to cook a dish called samaki wa kupaka (grilled fish with coconut sauce. The fish was grilled first, then Chef Ali cooked a coconut milk sauce with garlic, curry powder and lime juice to baste onto the grilled fish. It was sensational. Azad Ice Cream Shop - First, before getting back to the house to start cooking, we stopped for a classic Mombasa faluda. The entire meal Chef Ali and Fiza cooked was incredible. I especially enjoyed the Swahili grilled fish and the rice pilau

My country even better than all of them while they only depend on names that has living just like Dubai or doha or oman

Oh yes, Mombasa and the Swahili coast stretching from Somalia to south of Dar es Salaam has some of the best cuisines in the world. Its also an old, old place going back to the ages of the spice trade in the Indian Ocean. I love the old town of Mombasa, it has classical character and multicultural vibe. Love the Swahili Pillao - in fact I will get the spice mix recipe and make it at home.

I love the videos, but I have one question. And it's really because I am planning to visit Zambia in the near future, how do you deal with or prevent traveler's diarrhea? I asked because you go to so many different places. sorry to get so personal, I'm just wondering how can it be avoided. I'm asking coming from America

Hi Mark, I have noticed you mostly ignore your wife during your videos. It shows in her smile which appears forced. She wasnt even here at all. I love your videos, just would love you to show more appreciation and affection to your wife as you move around your tours. Thanks

The more I see people and the lifestyle, the food and the cultural aspect of the Mombasa city the more I see Zanzibar heritage in this costal area in fact people in Mombasa share more cultural values with those in Zanzibar than the rest of Kenya.

I felt in Brazil watching this. The same food, the hot weather (in most Brazil, the friendliness and everybody minding what this new guy is filming, the coconut milk, the messiness (but here is only a bit less messy. I loved this. Thank you.

Felt more proud to be born and raised in Mombasa just from watching this video, and those old town streets are my home streets, Kizingo to be specific. Never lost my accent regardless of being far from home.

I'm going to look out for Chef Ali and I want to try African food, because it seems very similar to Puerto Rican cooking. But, Im limited to marisco, chicken, pork and beef for meat. :)
