The char siu is a remnant of colonialism as well as before the French (Portuguese, English) the Chinese were trying to colonize Southeast Asia for millennia. This whole dish is a testament to a people being downtrodden and oppressed by foreign powers. It-s a wonderful sandwich as both food and an unintentional political statement. And the thing about peasant food the world over is it typically speaks politically without any intent to do so. Like how you can read the history of slavery through someone-s recipe for fried chicken.

Bahn mi is amazing and lets talk thighs lmao! Vietnamese food is simply amazing. I've dragged dozens of friends into Vietnamese food. I'd rather bahn mi than any sub, hero, etc. I draw the line at veal w medium peppers and onions however. What I love is every Viet place is different in all the right ways. Usually the staff is super friendly and remembers my idiosyncrasies. Is it racist I'm white and have to ask for chopsticks? Lol

How dare you! culturally appropriate French cuisine. How dare you! Next time I will just ignore the taste and just think Political Correctness when I eat a Banh Mi. Please spare the politics you closet communist and stick to food. The sandwich is delicious and that is enough.

I was in Ho Chi Minh City last summer and what I loved about the Bahn Mi on the street was that no two sandwiches were the same, and I ate a lot of them. My goal was to try as much Pho and Bahn Mi as my stomach could handle. I loved Vietnam.

Can't believe this lady tried to take an amazing sandwich of cultural melding and tried to somehow twist it into being a bad thing, while she's showing you how to make it. what a cancer.

Tried this recipe last night and it-s absolutely fantastic! I can-t wait to get the cookbook! Andrea Nguyen did a great job with this one, and I-m excited to try more of her recipes.

As a vietnamese, I think this is too much work for a banh mi. Just have some pate, pickles, vietnamese charcuterie, and a little bit of sweetened fish sauce, and you are good to go.
