I just went thru this nightmare. So close to planting too. had toms falling over when I watered them so knew it was gnats. Put stickies around and sure as shit tons of em. Funny how I didn't see one till it was too late. Seen all the usual vids of hydrogen peroxide in water but that never worked for me. Came across one vid and the dude put a mosquito dunk in his watering can. So I went out and got some and within 12 hrs they were all gone! Not one flying anyways and today my toms are standing up straight again so I'm so stoked! I'm using this method every year now just to prevent them. They should add it to potting soil huh. Just like housing codes should call for some kind of Diatomaceous earth to be placed in walls as bed bug infestation prevention. We had those bastards once and tried everything wasted thousands until I powdered house with diatomaceous earth and they were gone in a month.

I mix a drop of dawn dish soap, peroxide & distilled water as distilled water is safe for all plants even carnivorous ones which are what I raise. Then on 2 cookie sheets i dump my plants (bare-root) on 1 sheet then the soil & substrate on another, spread it out, outside in the sun or u can also bake it in an oven if no sun is available that dries out & heats up the soil to kill any & all gnats at every development stage, then soak the plants root on the sheet, then rinse the root system with distilled water.
Thats how u re-use your soil & substrate because that stuff is expensive.
Once u set up everything again pour in one & a quarter inch thick pool sand with a thin layer of long fiber sphagnum moss on top to protect my plants from more fungus gnats as well as sticky traps galore.

Repotted 70 Meyers lemon clones in Dec. Used high porosity EXPENSIVE commercial soil packaged in 8 cf bales that was sealed in heavy plastic. Sprayed plants with high pressure fine mist water to remove old dirt and any pests. Clear to bare roots. Moved plants indoors afterwards. Took for granted new dirt was sterile. NOT! A month later my grow room and home was FULL of gnats. Been using MB tea for 3 weeks now and no changes. As soon as I get a couple warm days im gonna have to bare roots and repot ALL my plants. including numerous dieffenbachias. You better bet im gonna be STERILIZING dirt before I use it. #1 rule. ALWAYS STERILIZE NEW DIRT!

I put hydroton pebbles on the top surface of a new spiderplant(houseplant. no gnats on that one but they sure like the 5 tomato plants growing on the laundryroom SW facing windowsill. I will try a soak and get some yellow traps, maybe even try the neem. I was going to kratky those in 5 gal buckets outside. still cool here in Van. BC though. .maybe put out in a week or so. the roots will be rinsed anyhow due to the current soil theyre growing in. All in all, GREAT information. Mine initially came in from the 15 potted geraniums I over winter on the front room window sill. Guess I should rethink that one.

A great video, I'm stuck in a major infestation of my indoor composting bins, parasites are everywhere, but really everywhere in the worm room, bedrooms, basement, bathrooms it is a complete mess, as you know worm bins should always be kept very wet-humid, I never had problem before, but since I brought in garden earth for the bedding it has been crazy. I'm stopping feeding all my bins until the situation is corrected, which strong heavy duty drastic treatment would you suggest. Thanks for yourhelp Philippe

Love your videos! Wanted to share with you that there is a product called Gnat Nix by Growstone that works like nothing else I've ever tried! It comes in various size bags and you just sprinkle a layer over the top of the soil. There are zero pesticides. It prevents the adults from laying their eggs and the larvae from emerging, so it is VERY effective. It's a small white gravel looking product so it actually looks nice too which is a bonus! Good luck, gnats are the worst! :D

I have had fungus gnats for 3 years now and have not tried to control them. They have not gotten out of control, and if I stare closely in my pots I usually can find 1 or 2 of them if I havent watered in a while, 4 or 5 if I recently watered. I might find one in the house (plants in sunroom off house) once or twice a week. Has been like this a long time, seems to be a steady state, so idk what is going on. Other people complain about infestationsmaybe overwatering?

Great video! I cover the top layer of my plants in sand. And Ill lay bowls of water around the plants with a couple drops of fish liquid in the bowl. It traps the gnats and they drown in the bowl. I switch the water out until theres no more gnats showing up in the bowl. Also whenever I water them Ill water them with 1 part peroxide and 3 parts water like you mentioned. Right now Im dealing with them and whiteflies so wish me luck. Lol

Thanks for this, I've been dealing with these pests a lot recently. I have my garden right outside my front door which gives me the added annoyance of having those little aholes fly into my house constantly and they are slowly taking over my whole garden (granted its not that big, will try a few of these tips and see if I can fix it. I have neem oil on hand, gonna run to the store and get some sticky traps and mosquito bits.

I live in an apartment. 3rd story. I look out my window and there are so many fungus gnats on the window and flying around outside. I plan on actually using my balcony this summer and I sure hope these tricks will work for me. Wonder if I need to put something on the soil outside around the apartment? Looking at getting bug repellant plants. Heard basil and lemon grass work? Maybe you could do a video on that

Hi, thanks for the video. I have planted potatoes in containers and they have gotten very wet over the past 2 weeks and no sun to dry them out. They are outside, not inside. When I went to check on them today, a cloud of little insects flew up. From what I have read online, this sounds like fungus gnats. but the plants are outdoors. Do fungus gnats affect outdoor plants too?

I am in an uphill battle against these annoying gnats myself. These are great tips. I just ordered a big bag of mosquito bits from Amazon. Thank you!
Another thing that I found is also very effective is a bug zapper. The zapper can kill about 20-30 gnats every night. It also makes a satisfying pop sound whenever one of these damned gnats gets electrocuted.

Yeah I didn't realize that that was what I was seeing at night when I was trying to do computer work I appreciate the video that you did you're not annoying which is good and very helpful and ground cinnamon seemed to take care of the problem completely but it's nice to know of the other remedies available especially those shared in the comments

I have a potted vegetable garden, and I just did the peroxide drench. Omgg So disgusting! Larvae are coming up to the surface, and look quite unhappy. Also there was so much foam, that there was clearly some sort of funk growing in there. I am using sticky traps and cinnamon as well. We'll see if it helped in a couple days!
