Stop growing boring varieties of plants. mix it up with some unique kale varieties that offer more color, flavor, or are better suited towards your unique growing environment roofterrace: Hardiness zone 7b here and I grew Cavolo nero (Tuscan kale) for the first time. It's been producing all summer long and is still going strong now in fall. Exceptional taste, cooks down much faster than other kale, dark green color after cooking. A winner, can only recommend! Also since you're always harvesting the bottom leaves, by the end of summer it will look like a palm tree, it's a gorgeous plant, mine are easily 1. 5m tall by now (grown in containers on a rooftop)

We bought some lacinato kale from lowes the beginning of the year and it has not stopped producing thru cold, no rain and extreme heat. Doesnt even wilt. We are surprised, didnt think it would be here today in 98 degrees. Doesnt even bother it. It doesnt get huge because we keep eating it but it grows back quickly(we do water it)

I am not a big fan of kale but now that I am growing vegetables I will definitely plant it. I did not realize all the different varieties there are. Thanks for explaining them so we can see which variety will work best for our area and taste. Thanks everyone for your suggestions on how to cook it.

Nice! Blue curled is my go-to (because that is all I have for seed, I'll check out one or two after the 2021 seeds come out. I never really liked kale until I grew my own, store-bought seemed to have a funky flavor. Thumb up cultivated and converted to a lovely blue color. Thank you, kind sir.

My favorite is lacinato kale, its not so bitter like the others! I harvest and freeze it for smoothies and also use it in veggie omlettes. I eat it EVERYDAY on way or the other. Its really so easy to grow too! Ive had some plants that made it through last years mild winter (Zone 7a.

That explains why I couldn't eat very much of any brassicas through the summer! Now that it's the proper season for it, we'll keep it growing as long as it does. We suggest looking up the wiki list of leafy vegetables to find all the other plants that you can eat the leaves from

My dad was growing kale years ago, he was given the first plants by my aunt in Ireland where her family grew them for cattle feed, in England, where we lived, he grew kale for us to eat, I remember the plants being huge and delicious, not picked until after the first frost

First year urban gardener. I bought a few varieties from baker creek to sow this fall but I was unsure which ones are best to plant in zone 10a. Super quick & helpful video! Thanks! I would be super interested in seeing how else you incorporate kale into your diet

I wasn't actually expecting to see Black Magic on this list, to be honest. This also gives me a little more hope that it should be able to withstand the heat here through the middle of summer since I can't really do much of a fall garden.

Kale has been a staple for many many years here in the Netherlands so it is so funny to see this 'trend' come up. We eat it as a cheap and easy meal, mashed with potatoes and served with sausage and gravy. Delicious and nutritious

Kale has always been very popular in The Netherlands not just now that its trendy. Its part of our staple winter comfort food. If you think winter you think boerenkool. They tend to let the frost go over it before harvesting.

Nice selection but you left out my favorite variety, Ethiopian kale (a. k. a. gomen) It grows beautifully in both warm and cold weather. Best of all the taste is delicious as it is somewhat related to the mustard family.

Kevin, a lot of my winter crops such as my kale have just got eaten and I have no idea what's eating them. I bought a spray called NATRIA (insecticidal soap) and it did nothing. Do you have any recommendations?
reply

Kale is eaten a lot in my country as stamppot boerenkool
It is basically cooking potatoes and kale together. Then mash it and put a piece of rookworst (smokesausage) with it.
Never was a huge fan of it
