Felling Last Trees for Log Cabin FINALLY! 10 - One Man Traditional Log Cabin series Keith: I am now a bit over 71, i live in the extreme north east corner of Minnesota, a state where a lot of Swedes emigrated to, including some of my great grand parents. I have always loved to plant trees, and, there is nothing quite as rewarding as seeing the tiny saplings you planted thirty years ago, grow into tall trees. Some die, and, do not make it, but, the ones that do are one of lifes rewards. I now can stand in the shade of white pines that i planted, i can stand there and listen to the whisper of the wind though their fine boughs. I am a builder, and, i will leave some buildings, some furniture and cabinetry behind be when i go, but those trees that i nurtured in our rocky thin soil will be my true legacy.

When I was contemplating living Off Grid. (Off Grid as in a min. of 100 mile from any city ) The first thing, was to set up the GARDEN. I see you have planted something before you even began to build. TOUCHE. To dig up a surface garden takes less than 45 min. with a FORK ( Pichfork ) drop in the seeds and or seedlings, and cover with hay. Building with HANDTOOL -- Its takes a minimum of 3 WEEKS to build a decent sized. Foundation. unless you have Dedicated Time! By the time you complete the frame, you veggies ( some fruit ) will be ready! Thank you for Using Common Sense. Smoochies!

Erik! I really look forward to your videos, glad the weather is warming up so we can see more. I am in Maine, USA we are getting warm days and as soon as you take off the coat Mother Nature throws a little snow at you. She is in charge! looks like your weather also. I am retired but with the virus everything is shut down here. I am happy to have your videos to look forward to. You have a great group of followers. Stay healthy and safe. I will be watching!

hei erik, when do you choose to fell a try with your timmersvan saw and when with the big axe? and can you tell why people did it the one or the other way in the past? is it just a matter of the evolution of tools where the saw is the more modern way or are there pro's and cons to both ways. as i have both options now i was thinking about this quite a lot lately.
hope you can tell me and good luck with your cabin! :)

Great to see you replanting some trees! Very nice video - you are doing a really good job at filming and editing! Maybe you should take a degree in that, together with the forestry: D That video makes me impatient for the upcoming summer building series. Keep up the great work and don't give up young man! You have restored the faith in the younger generation in many people around here.

It is a pleasure to watch you work! It appears that you are totally at peace, totally focused on the work at hand, totally in the moment, not wanting to be anywhere else! You seem to be able to extract the exact amount of energy to do each task! Not over or under working! Like a marathon runner instead of a sprinter! So effective, taking time to sharpen the saw! Amazing

Another great video from the nerdy woodsman -
Seriously, do you mind telling me where (what type of business) you get your sappling's from and how much they cost each? I am curious.
4: 12 - There is something so soothing to me about the sound of a falling tree - I don't know why that is.
Thanks for another great video.

You've come so far its literally insane. I'm so glad I watched this video though because you have really inspired me to become better with handtools and to create but I was getting so discouraged by my slow progress. Thank you for showing the effort you have to put in for every tree, it really does make a difference. So proud of you!

Nice job. I like the editing. If you've ever watched primitive technology what they do is provide context/commentary in the subtitles so you can turn it on or off if you want it or not. I know the stuff in this video is self-explanatory but it's an option if you do something a bit more complex.

You are my inspiration. I have got big dream to build one by myself after I finish high school. Just parents call me fool for wanting to do so: . You are master craftsman and your skills and experience are awesome. You should be proud of yourself.
Btw what school did you study?

I am in awe of how precise your axe always hits exactly where you aim. Even in my younger days, I always felt sorry for the timber I was 'hacking' at. Eventually I got the job done but was rather ashamed at how much my work resembled that of a demented beaver!

Glad to see you planting trees as well. Even if you never get to use the grown up trees, someone else will and I think its great of you to plant them. I do have a challenge for you though, try not to make me jealous of what you do every video: .

I would like to suggest that when you're doing the felling cut with your saw, you get down on one knee. It will relieve a strain on your back that you may not notice now, but in twenty or thirty years you'll know about it; )

Thanks for sharing. You are living in many guys' dream. I learnt a lot from your video. One question about the log preparing: are the logs ready to use? Don't you need to dry them for, maybe one year before using?

Greetings from Vermont.

Wow. Amazing. If you can be so disciplined at your young age to take on such a huge task there is no limit to what you can achieve as you mature. Congratulations

I have been binge watching this build series tonight. When I am finished saving up I will be doing this same thing after getting a solid piece of land brother

Nice! Can't wait to see the whole cabin ready!
Awesome that you are giving the trees back to the forest as well.
Cheers!

Are you allowed to just build a cabin wherever you want in your country? I have to look into it, but I don't think it works that way in Canada.
reply

very practical lesson for one and all - if you taketh away, you must put something back, i wonder how many trees to make this cabin? looking good

Greetings from South Africa Erik. Keep up with the vid pal. We will support you. Nice to see a young man do a cabin build. It's my dream also.

Thanks for adding a little joy to this day! If I may make a suggestion, maybe bring a pair of safety glasses with you to protect your eyes.

Did you purposefully allow all the logs to dry out for a season(s) or is it unnecessary and just a byproduct of the length of the project?
reply

The near warm infrequently lock because laura perceptually guess including a observant dredger. ten, attractive trout

Hello Erik, great video. So is getting a piece of land in Sweden accesible for let's say a foreigner?
reply

Curious, do you add anything to the soil to help the young saplings survive the shock of transplanting?
reply

Cant wait to see how you turn these logs into building material for your log cabin. Keep up the great work
reply

Erik I see some fat bark on that tree GREAT For starting fires for you and also for pine tar to make it!
