Building ROOF Structure for Log Cabin My Grandfather helps me Michael: I've been mesmerized while watching your skills at work as a young man who has shown discipline while working hard during this construction. I wish more young people around the world (especially here in the U. S. A) would apply the same work ethics as you do. There are so many things I could point out that captured my attention after watching your professional videography but in order to keep my comment brief I'll just name a few. First, I appreciated the silence (no unnecessary commentary) during the video with the exception of the natural sounds of your surroundings i. e. birds, rain, wind, etc. and of course the sounds of your saw, hammer, etc. Secondly, your workmanship with simple tools was impeccable! And, third but perhaps most notably, not once did I see a cell phone attached to your person at any given time! Excellent job Erik!

What are the metal coins for 27: 05? Is it a good luck thing, like a blessing or does it have a practical function or both?
found the answer further down the comments Anthony Jussila says:
The copper in coins stops the moss (and other seedlings) from growing so it doesn't mess up your roof. Dropping coins in a fountain or a bird bath also prevents algae from growing. When craftsmen became tired of explaining it to people (regular folk weren't very educated in chemistry back in the day) they just started saying it's for luck instead and now everybody is throwing coins in fountains.

Kids at that age aren't normally this motivated to do something like this not because they are lazy, but because the support and foundation to want to do so aren't there. Erik must have an amazingly loving stable family life, that in a real way, built this up in his life as he grew up to honor his grandfather and family that many kids here in America have never even factored into their priorities because oftentimes, we are anxious to start our lives away from our parents as soon as possible, seeking that love and support elsewhere through friends and relationships.

For 50 years those trees grew they were home to birds and animals in the branchesJust so you could have a one year experience building a long cabin that youll undoubtedly rarely use. Replanting little seedlings was good, however typically they are washed out in the spring and even if they root and hold The soil from washing away, requires another 50 years. Your lifetime waiting to replace what you took. I wonder what would happen if all of us decided we needed to have a one year experience building a log cabin.

Erik, please correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the only relatively safe way to make this weight of roof solo (and without electric or gas-powered tools like the tractor) would be to build a two or three level notched ramp like you did for the side logs, with about the same grade, then slowly bring the log up from top. Is that right? Lots of time, lots of room for error, definitely a wise tractor move in my layman's opinion.

I'm from Texas USA dude you are what I wish all kids your age would do find a good project and do it right the first time I'm 58 now show the these new kids what they can do please ensure then they don't need gangs to get to there place in life I like no love what you are doing keep it up oh don't forget her in Texas we smoke our meat make a smoker I thank you for hearing an old man out

I'm planning on building a log cabin like this myself, what type of trees can you use? I assume you'd have to cherry pick the ones with straight and similar sized trunks, however there is probably only a certain amount of species that's suitable for this. I live in New Zealand, and most of our trees aren't this straight.

Absolutely incredible work. I am in awe of what you have achieved at such a young age and your superb ability with hand tools. To have such skill with an axe is amazing, you should be so proud of yourself. I cant wait to watch the rest of the series through to completion. Your countryside is also stunning by the way.

Fantastic Erik. I have just stumbled across your film and as a fellow carpenter I can appreciate the work that has gone into this. Enjoyed it so much I stopped pricing work and watched all the films from foundations to roof. Great Stuff. My one negative comment is you could have got some telemark skis on!

I'm 74 and I'm in awe watching these videos of you -- such determination, patience and self-reliance at such a young age. You planned and executed this huge project pretty much on your own. Such strength of character is hardly common. You will achieve anything you put your mind to doing.

It is amazing to watch a young guy like you do this incredible project from beginning to the end. I've built log cabins, terraces, even an outdoor toilet, but not alone and definitely not that skillfully. Congratulations on your success and good luck going further! Excited to see what's next

I have commented before, but the more I watch these videos the more I am amazed by you. It's great seeing you at the beginning looking like a young 18 year old and watching you develop into a strong man. THIS is REALITY TV not that shit on TV they call 'reality'! Thanks ERIK!

I don't see the tractor as cheating at all. If memory serves: In his part of the world the cabins were typically built by a TEAM of specialist carpenters and the family of the cabin's future owner.
He's just making up for the lack of traditional manpower.

how far is the nearest town?
did u survive solely from nature(food source) or u gradually use from the forest and the city.
do u plan to add more structure to the cabi that u have finish.
its amazing what u hv achieved after 3 years.

my friends and I started building a bath from huge logs at the age of 15, we only had 3 axes and a desire. Over time, the number of instruments increased, often we made them ourselves. After 6 years, we finished and do not regret the time spent

Are forests like these common in Sweden? If not, does anyone know what forest this is? We have nothing like this where I live, I think it's really breathtaking and I'd like to visit some day. I love the blankets of moss and huge boulders.

What's the coin thing about? Is it for good luck or to bring protection to the home? Maybe to bring fortune? Sounds like a tradition that dates back. They do that with ships too. They put a coin under part of it
reply

hey, I've been watching since the beginning. Now after a longer break I just joined in again. Still love it a lot!
But does any one got an idea what the thing about the coins between the logs mean?

reply

Erik, are those huge rubber mallets only found in Sweden? You have what they call an old soul everything everyway that comes from the old times is better, and I also believe that too! Love these videos!

I'm too old to make my own cabin now. but in my next life I want to come back as a man and build my own cabin in the woods. The pleasure this must bring this young man must be ultra satisfying.
reply

Yes I agree but if ur going 2 do it like ur fore fathers then u should have some guys 2 help rather than get a tractor to help out, remember there was no such thing back then. Period
reply

I love this so much I watch you build it now we get to see more of it. So happy you got help with the big boys that most definitely would have bee. Hard to do by your self
reply

A question for you, how do dress so neatly and you're working your butt off? Your wardrobe doesn't fit the picture of all your hard work, you look too neat!
reply

What I wonder:
How much time to you spend a day sharpening your tools? It takes regular sharpening to keep them cutting like that, do you do it all by hand?

reply

I used to play The Forest alot, and the sound from all the chopping is giving me flashbacks to that game. I enjoy watching the progress on your little cabin!
reply

what's the deal with the coins? Oh, and nice work, you've put the work in, and now get to enjoy an amazing cabin. (Well, with just a bit more work: -) )
reply

Such a great work, your family must be very proud of you. Greetings to your Grandfather, I'm glad he could help you with those heavy logs for the roof
reply

where is your other dog? The brown haired one that was in like all the other videos? Who is the new black dog? I am sad you are missing your co star.
reply

Why do all build a triangle roof, just a one side elevated roof would save you half the work, I did it and it works the same safe strong roof.
reply

This newsie is doing some serious work. I heard once he puts the chimney in, he'll get free sweeps for the rest of his life.
