How to Make a Succulent Sphere Rebecca: I want to see a picture of this a year later. There seem to be some big problems with it (for those who want to make one. First. the moss balls. Succulents will root just about anywhere but they need sandy soil to grow. Soil provides nutrients to the plant. Moss doesn't. Basically the moss turns this into a pretty party decoration. Notice she mentions learning the false stem method from someone incorporating succulents into flower arrangements. No way can roots grow wrapped in tape. And to cut roots off and remove all the dirt just hoping they'll root. Make a bigger hole and shove the roots down in there. No need to tramautize the plant and hope it grows new roots. Then there is that aloe that I see in the beginning. I don't see specifically what she does with it but I've never seen one grow from a cutting (and saw a long post on a succulent group recently about clueless people buying aloe leaves online with the belief that they'll root. So if the roots were lopped off of it, it's dead. That doesn't even begin to address that each plant has different water and light needs and don't seem to be carefully selected to have similar needs.

If you simply stuck the succulent cuttings into the moss ball I don't see why it wouldn't work. Assuming there's some potting mix inside the ball the succulents would be perfectly happy growing in it. If you think it would get too moist you've never dealt with a kokedama before. They dry out SO quickly in the wind, it's actually harder to keep them well watered.
I'd be more interested in how the plants on the bottom grew. With the ball swinging in the wind I can't see light being an issue for those on the bottom and back, but how exactly would a plant's root system develop upside-down, how well would it grow with inverted gravity? Eventually they'd get really leggy, I assume, as they try to grow up vertical, but I guess you could grow some smaller sedums on the bottom and just trim them back constantly.

So cool. Do the new roots grow into the moss ball? How would you transplant the succulents once they outgrow the moss ball? Just cut the stems away from the attached roots and reroot them again? Thanks Laura!

I love everything you do! I just got 19 red moon cactus and want to make a sphere out of it. 19 really aren't alot so, I'm thinking I should get 4-6inch moss ball. Any advice or suggestion on size?

The problem with floral rape is that it will seal off any moisture coming in as that's the purpose of why we use it in floral bouquets! You should have just inserted the wire, should be sufficient.

Garden Answer - do you or could you do a video deconstructing a succulent ball? I would love to do one for summer here but there is no way it would survive where I live over winter.

Hi Laura and everyone who would have a response to this! Since we created a false stem for the rosette shape and wrapped it with floral tape from the base, would it still root?

I watched the kissing ball video first, then this one came up. didn't think I'd like the succulent ball as much, but wow! It's really beautiful! You do such a nice job!
