Bee Update - Where did they go? George: Just to let you know beehives need space in front of the door as well as it needs full sun in the morning and less in the evening so if you have it in a shady tight corner (as I've noticed from the garden tour you made before you recently moved to your knew home) they will quite suffer or even get lost to their way home after pollinating. So yeah a home garden isn't a very good space for a beehive but you can work it out if you follow the tips! I would really like to come to your garden and help you but I leave over the Misty Mountains near Beorn's cabin (that's where I get all the knowledge of apiculture)
P. S. last sentence was a joke about Middle Earth and the Hobbit if you didn't quite get it xD!

I believe your bees got too hot. You just need ventilation. A screened bottom board is a must in scorching hot summers AND a shim (mine is 3 1/2 tall) over your inner cover, and directly below your top cover (I see you have a migratory cover. I have an inner cover with the telescopic top cover, so I had to be careful that the shim fit inside the top cover) it has 1 1/2 holes drilled on two sides (mine are on the east and west sides of the shim) covered with #8 hardware cloth. I'm in North Florida, zone 8. My bees are in the center of my bee yard/garden. They get sun all day, which is also good to keep hive beetles down. I believe a sunny location with upper and lower ventilation is your answer.

I'm planning on getting a bee hive if I ever end up with a house with plenty of space to garden. Also, if you don't care about the honey making process, then you can use ladybugs to pollinate your plants. Ladybugs eat pests (mites, aphids, etc) so they are quite nice. Also, their larvae don't eat the leaves but also eat the pests. You can build this thing called a ladybug house, or a bug hotel so they can live in your garden. Also they are harmless to people and very pretty. They sell live ladybugs in Amazon.

I haven't really heard much about absconding. Lots of swarming. Weird that they all just up and left. Heat does seem like it played a factor. Maybe look into some ways to add ventilation. On really hot days I will crack the top open so they have some more air flow. I also have a screen bottom board. Not sure if you have that or not, I can't remember what type of bottom you got but that helps with ventilation too. Glad to hear you're not going to give up.

My nephew owns three farms in Kentucky. They have bee farms on all three farms. Last year he lost all his bees. I think he said he had trouble with the killer bees. They are very mean and just break up the hives of honey bees. He has done this for about 10 years so I know he knew what he was doing with them. He is going to have to start over also. Love that honey.

I am sure they are happy were every they move to, but do not give up. Please try again next year. I am sure you will have better luck. Wish I could keep bees, but I live in an apartment and I am allergic to bee stings, but we do need them and we need more people like you to reach out to them and help them cause we are killing the bees. Good luck for next time.

Lol. you're so funny! I'm sorry they up and left but might they come back to a previous home? That would be incredible huh? Well, I do love that you tried and are not giving up! You're a better woman than I am; ) xo

You not only inspire me to get in my yard and do all the things, but you have the best attitude. Im always inspired to let things go, be sad but move on with a productive positive attitude.

Did you know that absconding is unique to the USA? Bees in Canada don't do that. But in USA it's fairly common for a swarm to move into a hive and that doesn't happen here very often.
