Butterfly Bush Care Tips Garden Answer Adrian: Youre so right about the sun. When I bought our PW Pugster we wanted it near us to watch the butterflies flutter around it. The flower spikes were at least 6in in length but the spot to observe only had maybe 3hrs of hot mid day sun. Well the flower spike were getting smaller & smaller to maybe 1in as time went on. Moved it to 6-7hrs of sun & wowthey came back fast to about 4-5in. We have clay soil so I amended but in another video it said not to do that even in clay soil. PW website said that as well. We have underground critters & fear theyll ruin the plant. Decided to plant in a large 2ft across planter then wrap in the winter hoping itll survive. Love your videos. Learn so much

I have 3 one year old bushes started from cuttings, all from the same parent. I planted one in all day sun, one in partial shade, and one in all day shade. The best performance for growth goes to the one in partial shade, the slowest growth was the full shade one. Blossom counts were nearly equal across all three. It appeared that the more I watered the more blossom response I received from all three. However, extreme drought is the common description used for our region (western Oregon) for the past 6 to 8 weeks, with much more expected.

You made this way too complicated. Butterfly bushes are not fragile. I planted 20 of them over 10 years ago in my backyard, haphazardly. I do not maintain them whatsoever. Not even mulch/pine straw. They have continued to flourish, and grow year after year. I love the massive quantities of butterflies, and bees in my backyard now. Keep in mind, they are ALL planted in Georgia red clay. That is the only soil available to my area. I couldn't be bothered to get proper soil.

I had my butterfly bushes in their original nursery pots for 3 months before following these instructions to transplant them into the ground. They did well in the pots with daily water. However, now they are turning crispy and dropping leaves in the planting bed under the hot Florida sun. I disagree that directing water away from the root ball and planting in soil without amendments is helpful. Keeping them well watered is improving the performance of the plants.

I am in zone 9. I have lots of butterfly bushes. I did everything you said not to do.
They get blazing sun all day & I do water them 2x pr day. Now I am scared to water them.
I deadhead because when I do 2 new blooms replace the one I cut off.
They are doing just fine. I will be very careful not to over water. You may have saved their life.
Glad I clicked on this video.
Congratulations on getting a new baby!

I think these tags on plants need to change lingo to LOTS OF SUN and stop beating around the bush with vague instruction words.
Perhaps.

HARSH WINTER CLOTH COVER
HARSH PRUNE AFTER WINTER AFTER FROST PASSED->EARLY SPRING

Butterfly bushes are very invasive, prompting some gardening experts to say that they shouldnt be grown in the U. S. There are plenty of native butterfly and other pollinator plants available for your region. Please look into this rather than going for whats in the big box stores and some nurseries. Also, look out for those paid to promote certain large companies plants.

I recently planted Miss Molly. and came across this video today. very helpful! I need to move my Miss Molly.
Focussing on a single popular plant(or group like lavender) could be very helpful for many as you are able to give specifics given your knowledge and experience. Thank you Laura. I enjoy and look forward to ALL your videos

Im finding there are as many different thoughts on caring for BB as there are different kinds of bushes. Some say amend, some say dont, some say mulch some say dont. What it will mostly come down to is the location of where you live and what kind of natural soil you have. If you are a gardener go by what you know and feel is right.

Wow you did a great job on that fence so amazing how you got it in the ground too. Its going to be exciting to plant all those flower and see how exciting to see the eggs turn to Chrysalis then butterfly. I have a netted cage and cut the branches with the eggs on them and put them in the cage and watch them grow.
