Starting Tomato & Pepper Seeds! Garden Answer Sophie: To anyone who is watching this video and is really new to starting seeds, please understand you absolutely DO NOT need a heating mat and a grow light, neither do you need a sprayer. Chances are if you are starting from seed, you have a very low budget for whatever you want to grow. If you just put your seeds in a warm and bright place they will be totally fine. I know when I was super new to gardening, I was very intimidated and bummed out by the fact that i don't have equipment or resources to give my seeds the best chances. 4 years in and I can tell you, while those kind of things are nice to have and make it easier on you, they are an extra and are not a necessity. Go and put your seeds in the dirt and keep them warm, well lit and moist and you will for sure be fine. Good luck.

Laura, I have question and a comment. Question: I seem to recall sometime in the past you explained you water in the plant room with a garden hose running up the wall and coming in through a window. Surely you're not doing that in winter! Do you have that garden hose you moistened the bowl of soil with hooked up to a different system? Comment: When I sow seeds into cells, I use a bamboo skewer, moisten the tip, touch a seed in my hand and touch the soil in the cell. It transfers beautifully and efficiently! My wife and I love all your videos and feel like we've had the best visit with a good friend after watching them. Plus, we learn a ton and get so inspired! Oh, looks like I had more than one comment. ;) Thank You!

This is what I needed. I have saved this video to garden interests. I will be trying this in March. Wish me luck! My hubby usually grows a big garden and his is not fun to watch. I don't know how he does it. His garden starts out real neat and pretty and then it looks like you are taking a walk in the woods, but it always produces. The one question I have is, do I have to buy a heat pad for every tray to germinate? That seems a little expensive. I wonder how I can do flowers and vegetables at the same time? Thanks so much for posting.

Hi! I'm not usually this technically challenged, but it just took me half an hour to figure out how to comment here! Anyway, I just tested the germ on some grain for my husband the other day using my seed sprouter for microgreens. The seeds germinated so fast I thought maybe I should try germinating some of my flower seeds in the sprouter trays and then plant them in seed starter mix. I'm just wondering if you or any of your followers have tried this. I don't want to waste my seeds if someone with experience has tried this and failed.

Im originally from Northern Europe, now living in Italy - a huge chance climate wise and Im just trying to figure it all out! Im going to try to grow tomatoes and peppers on my balcony! We get enough sun, no frost, just colder temperatures at night. Unfortunately I might have already killed my lemon tree. its wrapped up for winter but peeked underneath yesterday and it dropped all its leaves. I hope it recovers and Im more lucky with my tomato seeds!

Is anyone else really confused about what fluorescent light bulbs to buy for seeds? As lovely as these growing systems are (ah, pause, dream) / I think many of us are using bookshelfs and some T5 flurorescent lighting. In setting up as todays project - my bulbs are burnt out and Im not sure what to replace them With! Ive had for awhile so the label is worn out! Im doing so reading on line but its soooo confusing! Any ideas?

Good morning from Alabama! I have great interest in starting from seeds and feel the table top grow light is a great place for me to start. Thank you for showing that option. The grow light you show here, where is it from and does it fit the gardeners supply seed growing kit you use? (Or the 12 count one I have found online) Thank you for you great videos! We enjoy each and everyone! War Eagle!

Hi Laura. I started some flower seeds indoors and they are doing great, but 2 days ago I noticed a fine layer of fungus growing on top of one of the cells. I assumed it was from the area being too wet and so I removed the dome, took it off of the capillary mat, scraped the top layer of soil off, and let it dry out. Do you recommend spraying a fungicide or any other treatment?

My frost free date is April 15, so I just finished planting about 220 seeds in the last two days. It was comforting to see your video to reinforce that I planted them correctly. I have never planted that many seeds and I learned to appreciate which seed companies have more of the useful info on the package. It takes time to look up planting depths on line.

I finally put everything on drip thankyou for encouraging me to do so. It is a life saver! In Florida there's no restrictions on harvesting rainwater. Do you have any suggestions on the best way to hook up drip from a rain barrel? Am I overthinking? Lol I would like it to be gravity fed only. Much love from Florida
