Planting Bee Balm & Staking a Leaning Hydrangea Tree! Garden Answer Creatively, : I wish you would do a video on tips for starting a garden from SCRATCH! Like if you had a blank slate what are some things you'd definitely plant, what are some cheap plants that give you a big bang for your buck, a list of all the things to consider besides just the usual things light requirements & zone, & stuff. I just bought a house and I'm really struggling with what to plant and where. Theres currently rectangular spaces in the front and on both sides kind of landscaped for plants, where they just have a few bushes/hedges (not sure what kind) theres a space about 3 x 20 foot long in the front, and on each side there is a space about 3 x 10 foot long. I just dont know where to start! I also think maybe i should change it from a rectangle to a more inordinary shape but don't know what shape to do!

QUESTION: I am in zone 10 and my tomatoes are producing fruit already. Unfortunately, the birds are eating my tomatoes when they start turning pink/red. Do you have any suggestions how to protect my crops? I was looking into Harvest Guard but I realized the fabric keeps the plants warm and it will cook my tomatoes. I cannot use cloches either because my plants are about 5 ft. tall. Do you have any suggestions? With the current situation most likely I will need to buy something online. But what?

I have moles voles & probably gophers to. Can anyone tell me how Laura keeps them out of the yard or eating her plants? Ive planted a monarda & the critters got to it so if they are invasive, theyll take care of it. lol. Seriously, I dug a hole for the monarda, Biotone and filled it with PW soil with Permatil mole/vole block and they still got to the roots. Please tell me how you keep them from your plants?

Hi Laura!
I used espoma organic Iron Tone on a white microfila hydrangea because
its leafs were turning a bit yellow and after a couple of weeks the white blooms started turning green!
I Love the look since I cant find any Limelight hydrangeas here locally.
Do you know why?
I thought you couldnt change the color on the white hydrangeas.
I live in California zone 10.

How can this be, when yours comes back every year? I Ohio area for me it states a 6, but all nurserys here state, go with a 5. Please let me know how yours from Proven Winner comes back & also I bought PW as well.

Im so excited to see monarda from PW. I bought some from a different grower and I love the scent. It smells like bergamot, which is a nostalgic scent for me, my grandmother has a bergamot tree and I grew up eating the fruit.
Can you tell me what this smells like? I know you said citrus and spice. I guess I just want t know if it smells like bergamot. Lol

Thank you for the video. I keep seeing you plant perennials in full bloom in April that I normally wouldn't see blooming for a while. What does the rest of the season for these plants look like when you do this? Seeing a Monarda blooming here (zone 5 Pennsylvania) while the daffodils are blooming would be very odd!

Laura, do you ever amend the soil you're planting in with compost or anything? I know you've complained about the clay soil you have, but I never see you amending it. I am unsure what to do with my clay soil. I always feel tempted to add things to the planting holes but have heard mixed things about doing so.

Hey Laura,
Super off topic but Ive had a wisteria now for about 2 years and it hasnt bloomed. Its in a full sun area, and I do water it sufficiently. Its really big and green but no blooms. I garden in a zone 9. Do you know what I could do to help it? Have you ever considered a wisteria yourself?

I like the way bee balm looks but I hate the smell of its foliage. It makes me gag. I still have it all in the name of the pollinators. I saw some amazing monarda last year that was 4 feet tall. Not sure what variety it was but it was a light lavender.
