Planting a Few Things Ive Never Grown Before! Garden Answer Roy: Bear's Breeches - They say full sun, but my experience has been that morning sun or morning dappled sun and then filtered shade is best. They'll grow well in the sun until they start to flower and then it's like the plant diverts energy from the leaves to the flower stalk and the leaves turn yellow and die. Really just when you need them to look their best. Those that are more in the shade will be larger, greener and with gloriously tall flower stalks. I don't know how they'll do in your area, but they do get large - larger than you allotted them. Our flower stalks are well over 6'. Since everyone loves to send you things I'll try to gather seeds, but I understand that they can shoot up to 30' when they're ripe. This could explain why my neighbor now has them.

This is a random question. We are developing a garden in a area that is not established which means a LOT of weeds and unwelcome bugs. Everything seems to be eaten. What are some plants that can withstand bugs and help establish a healthy environment? Perennials would be awesome! Even my marigolds seem to get eaten before I can get them to flower! Do I need to start big plants first or are there any other tips for spaces like that to gain control over insects quickly? I mulched a thick layer of hay. That seems to have helped some but my cosmos still got eaten we dont have an established lawn yet either. Dealing with lots of Grasshoppers and beetles.

Ok i needed to just pause the video & tell you this! I'm at 15: 10 where youre talking about your drip system & while I'm NOT happy you've run into a problem, I am happy to hear it happens to you as well. My husband & I are just mere mortals compared to you & Aaron lol and irrigation is still a very new, complicated struggle for us. Whenever I think about it, I start to feel a little overwhelmed. And then I think about yall's irrigation system & I just dont know how you keep it all straight - make sure everything is working, add new lines on but not too many on the same zone, etc.
Anyway - just wanted to share that with you!

Be sure you really love acanthus because you will never be able to get rid of it. You might want to put it into a planter to check it's spread. Any root left behind will sprout a new plant. Keep it away from walkways as the leaves can be very prickly and irritating to your skin. We had them outside our apartment door when we lived in California and the leaf stalks were more like branches. reaching out to scrape us. They were a constant battle for me. I even tried to kill them and was unsuccessful!

I LOVE filipendula! Flore pleno is so gorgeous, I put four in last year, and they are just magical in bloom. I think filipendula venusta is my favorite, it's a 6-footer with beautiful pink flowers. I have them in full sun (zone 6, Utah, and as I long as they get enough water they do really well. The only issue I've had has been chlorosis, but so far only with the venusta, not flore pleno. Great plant choices, love watching your videos! Also thinking I might need to try some hairy balls too.

Hi Laura! Just watched your video and what drew me to it, was the Bears Breeches. I have grown them. It was actually experimental for me because I, like you had never seen it before. In fact, I thought it was a dandelion on steroids! Then, when it started growing, thats when I knew it was on steroids! I love this plant. For me, it lasted for about 5 years. Im in zone 6, NE Kansas. I saved some seeds and will see if I can get them to germinate. If not, Ill make a trip to the nursery.

Laura. I have an acanthus Bears Breech here in zone four. lost one that I had out in the open, then I planted one under a large pine tree and it has loved that spot. I rarely water it and it started blooming the second year. Also the milkweed hairy balls I have seen in floral arrangements in Martha Stewarts new flower arrangement book (mostly arranged by Kevin Starkey. Theyre gorgeous. Thats the greatest book!

Love the look of the meadowsweet, definitely reminds me of baby's breath. The Acanthus mollis can be a huge garden bully here in Australia, super hard to get rid of and self seeds everywhere! Agapanthus is much the same, we need to buy sterile versions from the nursery. I just find it so interesting how different plants behave in different climates!

My acanthus is growing in a garden that hardly ever gets any water, here in Australia. It dies off after it has bloomed. Then comes up bigger the next season. I just realised last week that it has some babies coming up next to it. So I will be transplanting this weekend. I love your garden and are so envious of all the plants that you use.

Acanthus Mollis. I have two. Its done nothing much since planted in 2017 and it was just finishing up flowering. Next two years - miniature leaves, no stalk. This year the leaves are bigger, maybe 6 - 8 and more of them. Im still looking for the center stalk or stalks. If there are none this year, out it goes. Im in zone 5b.
