Looking at 20 Great Seed Starting Set-Ups! Garden Answer The: How crazy was that to sit with my cup of coffee and turn on Garden Answer (morning ritual) and see my ugly basement front and center on my screen. When I took those photos almost a year ago, never would I dream I'd be on Garden Answer. I'm looking at the photos just laughing at my set up with an old ironing board I pulled from the metal scrap pile, tables everywhere. Organized chaos for sure. But a gardener has to do what a gardener has to do. And greenhouse on my husband's to-do list? We're on it! Carried all the windows (70+) from our barn into the basement to start scraping and painting them to get a jump on our soon to be spring project. Also picked up a small (very cool) vintage woodstove today to heat it. Happy gardening! Lauren, South Hampton, NH

I still have Kale growing through the winter Oregon, coast. I cut some new leaves for a smoothy. and had a few too many. I changed their water every 2 days and left them in a jar of water on the counter. they still looked great. and after a week or 2 they sent out roots. go figure! A kale new leaf put out roots. I changed water and added a drop of fertilizer they now have 1 1/2 lots of roots. my plan is to pot them up grow inside till they start going and take them out to the garden. if this works I'll be weeks ahead. the stems are sturdy not like seedling sprouts.

Im not sure where to start. Thank you. I guess thats first. I just want to say that you are the very first thing I watch when I get home from work. Id love to be a morning person and enjoy it with coffee. But such is life. Lol. The only thing that disappoints me is when I know its going to end soon. I sometimes find myself checking the minutes left on the video. This series with others ideas being shared is so inspirational and since you yourself have already impacted my life immensely, Im looking forward to how this feeds my creative side. Thank you again.

I wanted to include mine but I didnt have good pictures and I doubt anyone in their right mind would copy it. I live in a 12x16 home. When I started planting I wasnt sure how it was going to work. I put them on a shelf with simple shop lights. But then I ran out of space. And I kept planting. Trays in the bath tub sinks and table. Decent days I put them in my vehicles. Over 20 trays and somehow I managed to successfully raise most of them to full size. This year I am only winter sowing.

I once got a good tip about dealing with fungus gnats and thought Id pass it along. Ive tried and still use the sticky traps but what really did do the job for me was using BT. It only took 2 applications and my problem was solved. I just added BT to my watering can and it kills the larvae in the soil dealing with the problem at the root cause (pun intended, lol) No more flying insects throughout my home. I wish I had known this sooner. It was a game changer. Hope this helps.

Hi Laura! It was fun seeing the different set ups that people use for seed starting. I got a couple of ideas from them and may even try the Ziploc method. Those metal shelves are definitely not Bakers Racks. LOL! They make a nice set up though. I have 3 Bakers Racks that my husband made for me out of wrought iron and they're much more decorative. I've thought about getting grow lights and using a shelf, or two, on one of them for seed starting. Thank you so much for sharing!

I a newbie to seed starting. Having problems keeping them alive after germination. I have self watering seed starters from gardeners supply and did plant just like you recommend. Even with vermiculite. Maybe Im taking the covers off too soon or too late? Trying to wait for all the seeds to come up (they dont seem to germinate at the same times even the same timeframes on the package) could you give a little more information on growing them after germination?

The ideas to ask readers to submit pictures is fabulous. One suggestion is to make a list of possible submission ideas for the 2022 gardening year. I know Im guilty of taking most pictures in portrait. Also, finding pictures taken from the same angle is a bit hard to find in the dead of winter. Another suggestion is something Ive done is the same garden, same angle and a picture from winter, spring, summer and fall.

Hello friends!
Im trying to figure out my hardiness zone. I live in Uruguay, our average extreme low temp is from -3C to 18C (26F to 64F.
(Note on the climate here: humid subtropical climate (Cfa, also known as pampeano, with the exception of a very small portion of oceanic climate (Cfb) in the southeast)
I really want to grow lupine, but they seem to die time and time again in our summer heat

Laura, when you gave us a tour of the grow lights you have used, you said that you had not used the Oslow enough at that time to know for sure how effective those lights were yet. Gardner's Supply lists them as high output LEDs and says that they don't have to have their height adjusted, similar to the Bamboo Grow Light Garden. Have you used your Oslo set up enough to know how it compares? Thanks so much.
