Planting Some Beautiful Annuals in Containers and the Landscape! Garden Answer Susannah: I have found that serrated steak knives (amazon and the cheap ones) work really well on 'landscape fabric'. I won't go into the details but a so-called professional told me that 2 layers of coconut mat would allow me 2-3 years of planting our entire 7/8 acre property with no weeds. Liar, liar, pants on fire. Anyway, planting anything is friggin' next to impossible because nothing I can weld (72-year-old-female) will slice through that. Our gardener was having a problem and that didn't bode well seeing that I had 16 roses, 24 Blue Elijahs, 24 Sages, 1 Yellow Bird Magnolia, and 5 Hybicus syriacus French Cabaret, 6 pink lavenders, and 7 Karl Foerster Grasses sitting in pots in driving blocking all access to the garage waiting to be planted. Time was ticking. I finally gave up trying because even with a new blade utility knife I could not pierce the double thick and wet matting. Anyway, without all the whining and temper tantrums that follow, I found a way. I bought a hugely expensive bowie knife. Expensive x French customs. Once seeing and holding it I just could not bear the thought of using it to pierce through the matting to the soil beneath. So I went into the kitchen and got one of the steak knives that we considered unworthy of steak because they shredded any cooked meat instead of slicing it. It was nearly like a miracle! It cut through matting, wet or dry like a hot knife through butter. One of the 8 knives has lasted through all the plantings and there's no end in sight. That one knife saved the lives of 83 plants! SUPER easy to clean and eager to please. I lost 5 box cutters but it saved my Dremel rotary, my Bowie, and the professional's life. (Although I am still not happy about the weeds growing up through the double coconut matting. Which I will not recommend to anyone anywhere. Although we now use the amazon serrated steak knife to gain access to pull out the weeds) What did I learn? Live and learn! The gardens will be thriving and it is because of your videos and my small past experiences.

Laura, help. I was watching your video and feeling really accomplished because I planted up all my containers today. Later I realized I made a huge mistake because I used bags of garden soil instead of potting soil. I did add compost but am afraid the soil is to dense/heavy and wont drain properly. What do I do? Do you think I can still pull all the plants out and re- plant them? Help

My biggest battle trying to plant some color in the front yard is the roots from our trees! I saw you auger right into those containers by the ball field, do those trees roots just grow straight down! Do you have any advice for how to deal with tree roots? I battle between ripping the trees out, but then I love trees too and do not want to hurt them. Another fun video, thanks for sharing!

Hi Laura and Aaron! The bed with the roses will be so pretty when they fill out. I like the combination of plants that you put in the other containers. They will be pretty, too. It was so nice of Amy to help you out again. She's such a hard worker, too. And Rosa is such an asset to keeping everything looking good. Aaron, loved the drone shot! Thank you so much for sharing!

Perfect timing! Im ready to plant all my dahlias in the 25x6x6 raised bed I built. I had a different, more difficult thought on how to plant the 1 gal pot dahlias but thanks to this video now I know what to do. I have 33 dahlias and I will fill in the bed as much as I can. Its my first time to plant flowers with tubers. Thanks Laura! - Zee, N. Cali zone10a

I do have one question the sweet potato vine, do they grow from a sweet potato and could you harvest them at the end of the season?

Such an amazing amount of work you and your 'elves' accomplished! Love the footage and the overhead shots. Suggestion: put small stakes in the landscape fabric holes when you pull the annuals. Much less work next year! Love looking at all the beauty, can't wait to see the progress over the summer!
