Blue Poppies!

Blue Poppies!

video description

The Blue Poppies at Longwood Gardens are blooming, and I just has to take you along to see these true blue blooms. Once considered a myth, blue-poppies are alive and thriving at Longwood Gardens. These spectacular flowers-which are native to the high elevations of the Himalayan Mountains-reside in the Longwood Gardens conservatory where temperatures are kept cool to make the plants comfortable during their flowering season. Blue-poppies are infrequently cultivated outside their native habitat. Given the right conditions, however, they can thrive in gardens located in the northern regions of the U. S. and Europe

Longwood is actually helpful in finding seeds and plants. Just ask them. They may sell a few, or they may know where you can get them. I consider Longwood my -home garden- as I visited there many times when I lived in the area (I visited nearly daily for about 3 yrs, and I lived in the area a total of 10 yrs. I miss Longwood.
If you have a chance to get into Wayne PA for Chanticlear, then make the trip. That is my second -home garden- -- one I found about 5 yrs into my time in PA.
I'm trying blue Himalayan poppies here in my garden in Aotearoa (New Zealand.

I can tell you where NOT to order them from & that-s Etsy, in particular Seedville. Out of 8 seed varieties I ordered from them this year only 1 germinated & at a poor rate. I am sooo disappointed! My other seeds from Johnny-s & box stores (18 varieties) all germinated perfectly. The only failures were the ones from there. I did not order blue poppy seeds but I know they carry it, and now I-ll have to find a diff source.

I have some Meconopsis betonicifolia currently germinated, in my home here in Nova Scotia. The seedlings are soooo small and have been for awhile. I purchased the seeds on a visit to Reford Gardens (Jardin de Metis) in Quebec, Canada a few years ago and kept them in my refrigerator. Not sure if they sell seeds online but their info email is info-jardinsdemetis. com. They came with a very detailed how -to brochure.

Thank you Danielle for this unique video, so beautiful and delicate these Puppies. The blue seems like they are flowers from a fairytale.
Grow them if you can. Love to see more of them. Enjoyed the history involved, I would have never known about them had it not been for you. Here where I live, in Majorca, one wouldn-t even dreamed they exist.
Again thank you for sharing with all of us.

Plant World in the Uk has them. They ship globally. I am in the U. S. A, zone 5, and I ordered some Menocopsis Lingholm seeds from Plant World. They are supposed to be the easiest to grow out of all the types of blue poppies. I planted 2 seed pkts in February. I did stratify them. I only got one to sprout. It is still growing, it is about an inch tall. I am hoping it will keep growing strong.

Where is your farm? Assuming near Longwood? I've been visiting Longwood since at least 1961 when it was free to enter. I found a place online that I ordered Himalayan blue poppies along with yellow and purple. I'll have to check my emails to see where I purchased them. I'm trying to start them up inside at the moment. The grape/purple ones started sprouting

Being from Lancaster PA then moving to Seattle I had these in my yards along with the yellow variety. There was this guy at the farmers market in Gig Harbor WA farmers market that was selling these guys for $10. Blooming sz in quart pots. They grew easily for me there. As much as I hate the weather in the PNW there but it also has its advantages.

Very enjoyable! I am growing Tweedia (blue milkweed) this year. It is a similar soft blue and also called Oxypetalum. It is an annual here. I ordered seeds from Geo seeds. You would love it. I am in Wisconsin and would share some plants if you were closer. The blue color is unusual just like the poppies. Thanks for another inspiring video!

Grew them successfully in zone 7a, Western WA. We got them potted up from a specialty nursery near Bellingham. Alas, when weeding, our garden maintenance crew pulled them up and tossed them out! I will not repeat my choice words. I have intended to try to grow them from seed but haven-t gotten to it yet. Buckley list!

So beautiful and mysterious! I hope you find the seeds to try growing them. I am having trouble understanding zones as I am zone 7a but nothing is blooming or even budding while zone 6b is gorgeous? Can someone help explain? Thank you for your content and very relatable information -

OOOOOHHHHHHH!
That light blue color is just magical!
I hope you DO get to try and grow them!
You've got more of chance up there than we do down here in Texas!
What a treat that would be!
Thank You for taking me with you to -THE- Gardens!

Danielle, the One Stop Poppy Shop sells the Himalayan Blue poppy seeds, along with many others. Don't you just love Longwood Gardens? One of my favorite places on earth! I always come home from there peaceful and yet excited to try new ideas I saw there.

When I lived in Alaska they were grown well. I have tried to grow them in Maine and failed will continue to try to get them to grow. Longwood Gardens has been a personal favorite in my childhood. Have not been in many years.

So excited to see this as I happen to have started some seeds a few weeks ago. I came across them online and purchased them from a seed seller in England. So far only a few have sprouted but I will baby them like crazy!
