Creating Hummingbird Way in the Hydrangea Room Garden Arbor Installation

- I clicked on the video because I saw the word, -Hydrangea, -. Every Sunday we'd drive 45 minutes out east for Sunday dinner at Great-Gramma Smurros, the house filled with the smell of Meatballs & Love being cooked in the kitchen. My Great- Grandparents had a HUGE property, by comparison to neighboring homes, that stretched to the end of their street. A quick run through Dense & overly grown Sea Oats & we are at the ocean. Along that walk, & all throughout Great-Gramma's yard were these Beautiful bushes with ginormous flowers, that were blue? or pink? No, no maybe purple! At some point I learned & began to understand why. Those bushes I'd dreamed of since childhood were called Hydrangeas and the Genus I remembered WERE ALL of those beautiful colors! That was the beginning of my life long NEED for these beautiful bushes in my Garden.
-In Fall of 2020, we purchased our first home. Our home borders 1 of the 4 'lakes' within our development for fishing/recreation, & those bordering it must allow an easement on any side of the home where there is access to the lake. There were only 2 owners prior to us & it was clear that the original owners knew what they were doing & had planted Gardens throughout the property. Unfortunately, the owner in between must not have had a green thumb, or interest, or maybe just time for that matter. & we had our work cut out for us with clean-up & bringing it back to life so that it could once again be appreciated by many as they accessed the Lake.
-We knew our best bet was to be patient & wait until Spring to see all our Garden had awaiting, as well as what areas were needing our love & attention. Needless to say that when I 1st noticed this beautiful, big, blue flower begin to bloom. I was beyond overjoyed, as I was finally the owner of not 1, but 2 Hydrangea bushes!
- As I was watching/listening to this video, you then shared something else that seemed coincidental, not because of the Big Italian Family thing or the fact that my 5th & youngest child has a name special to my heart! (if you guessed Lilly, you'd be correct; ) ). We moved from NY to NC - 6 years ago & soon after, as my Mother, Grandmother, and Great Grandmother before me, decided to grow a Garden. We began with the typical annuals, Marigolds, Petunias, Snapdragons, added some Fruit, Veggies, & Herbs, Tomatoes, Peppers, Strawberries, Squash/Zucchini, Basil, Rosemary, Lemon Thyme, & Mint etc. I knew that patience, and gaining experience would be key in growing our knowledge, and starting small as to get overwhelmed, was the best way to keep growing not only bigger & more over time, but more importantly, growing BETTER!
- About 2 yrs in we went to pick-up a rug from FB marketplace. At this point I'd become one of those people who would & wanted to talk Gardening to any & everyone who might share their wealth of experience, knowledge, or guidance. I saw that she'd been working in the Garden & she was delighted to walk us around the property and show off her hard work. There were bags kinda sitting here and there and I asked what they were. -Lilly's, I'm separating them and preparing them for winter. Here, would you like to take some home for your Garden? - Needless to say I very gratefully & excitedly accepted, although I'd be lying if i said I wasn't petrified of killing them!
- We've moved (locally) 3 times since then and we've brought our Lilly's with us every time. They are, after all, our 1st perennial (and they DO have feelings; ). and we've managed to keep them alive & thriving. plus there will forever be a story there.
- So I felt utterly compelled to comment, regardless of it's too win. or just have shared a story

Love hearing the story of your grandmother! I can relate as my mother passed down her love of gardening to me and now that I am retired, I have dedicated myself to building an extensive garden in her memory. It makes me happy to think of how much she would love it - much of what I have planted are things that she loved. Your video also really hit a note with me as I am in the process of installing a large arbor to serve as an entry point to my pond and wildlife -garden room-. I think I am going to plant Ruby Moon Hyacinth Bean on it for this year.

Wow what a wonderful design. will look fantastic with the hydrangeas too. Putting a new scalloped vinyl fence in my front yard this spring & planning a mix of annuals for a cottage garden effect with a beautiful blue hydrangea added at the end of the fence/front walk. Thought the story of your grandmother was wonderful. so happy you found her pin.

I-m so glad I found you! We seem to have a lot in common - not only our love of gardening, but the way hummingbirds represent the love we have for those we-ve lost, plus I live in Pennsylvania too, but on the eastern side. Hi! Is crazy to think that memories as a child make such an impact when we are older. I always would remember gardening with my grandma when I was younger. I loved it and to this day it-s what has shaped my future and career. Glad I found your page!

I'm brand new to flower gardening. My bff helped me design a garden escape on paper and I just got some seeds started this week. Lots of outdoor prep to still go, but your videos are so helpful! I love how you educated, share your stories, and garden.

Have you already given away the lilies? Do you plant Gloriosa Daisies? Love them. Angelica? Also check out Wildseed Farms seed catalog. There is a bee balm (monarda) in there I planted years ago. GORGEOUS! Thank you for your videos!

I just installed a 3 arbor tunnel myself. I bought them at Menards. Not sure yet what I'm going to play by them, but I do have some hyacinth bean, scarlet runner bean, and climbing black-eyed susan vine seeds. so maybe those.

How totally cool to see the lillies from the bulbs you won! I am a fairly new gardener, started at the beginning of the pandemic. So my garden is very young and I am still adding to my flowerbeds.
