Getting those bulbs to have enough leaves to rebloom well next year has not worked well for me. Inside they don't get enough light. . Even those that spent the summer outside and made several new leaves, have not rebloomed reliably the next year. Often 2 or 3 flowers on the stalk instead of the usual 4. In my experience, these are bulbs that peter out slowly over time while leaving you with a mess of long strappy leaves that NEVER want to die.
Getting the leaves to die down on their own inside really never happens if left in the spot they bloomed. Outside they grow more leaves that are green until dug in the fall.
This year the voles simply devoured the bulbs right before I was about dig them last fall and bring them back inside.
Fungus gnats have been a huge issue in the past. The yellow traps do not STOP them. I was most interested to watch you talk about the peroxide/water mixture. Tried that as a preventative on some new baby house plants this winter. Either they came clean or it worked.
Not a favorite flower for me as their moment of glory is just too short to be looking at them for weeks until I can put them outside.

Your amaryllis are beautiful and I enjoyed this so much! I hope you will answer a question about the leaves. Are they like daffodils providing energy to the bulb for the next year's blooms? I got one in a box 3 years ago and didn't even plant it the first year. The second year I did plant it and it bloomed then I let it die back like daffodils do and put it in the basement. In the summer I noticed a few leaves starting so I put it outside and a few months later the leaves died and it hadn't bloomed. So I cut the leaves off and brought the pot inside and forgot about it till I noticed a bloom stalk had started about a month ago. It's now blooming but it never developed any leaves! I didn't know anything about amaryllis except I think they are beautiful! I feel like this bulb has survived in spite of my care, not because of it! It definitely deserves better, similar to apple blossom but the pink varies from very light to medium dark. -

I love my amaryllis and have done the basement method after they bloom and I have had them in my window sill for several months with just the leaves. One must have space to do all this. I tire of the leaves and want something else. I also have found that the blooms will weep a sticky substance and you have to be careful where you place your bulbs because the substance can damage wooden surfaces. After trying to save the bulbs after they bloom for me they have bloomed again but with not as much vigor maybe only one stalk. I finally decided that I would treat my bulbs like an annual and buy new ones each year.

A sad little story for you. Only today I found a gorgeous Amarylis which had not yet bloomed, similar to your Sweet Nymph, in a very sad state on my patio. The base of the stem had turned to mulch, I thought that one of the dogs must have knocked it. I cut the stem just above the mulch, saw that the stem was hollow, & that the unopened buds had been nibbled, I do not know what possessed me, but I looked up into the cut stem, to find a family of baby slugs living inside the stem Ugghhhhh, I have never seen anything like it, can send photos if interested -)

This is the first year I-ve grown amaryllis - I got four from White Flower Farm (they have tons of different kinds) and they are gorgeous. I bought some for myself after buying them as gifts for my mom, dad, and sister for Christmas, and they couldn-t stop talking about them, they were so thrilled. I sent them gift versions, but then bought myself just the bulbs. I got three different kinds/colors of the double Nymphs and an Amadeus that is getting ready to bloom. I watched your pre-Christmas amaryllis video and that-s why I got all these! Thank you!

Thanks for sharing experience and beautiful flowers. I found thrips on the leaves of one my plants just before the buds came out this January. I sprayed and eventually cut off the leaves because they looked so infested. However the bloom stalk was undamaged The current bloom is stunning. This amaryllis which was just described as red, bloomed on one stalk Jan 2021 and again July 2021. And now has huge (7 -8 ins in diameter) blooms on one stock. So 3 blooms in one year. Not as impressive though as three blooms at once.

I live in south Louisiana. Last year I fell in love with amaryllis before I even owned any. I kept seeing them blooming in flower beds around me the past few springs. I happened upon a deal where a guy was getting rid of his and selling them for $1 each. I bought 50 and planted them. Only one bloomed bc they were small bulbs. But now I-m obsessed! I left them in the ground all year and they have gone from walnut size to baseball size in one growing season! I-m hoping to get lots of blooms this spring. I can-t wait!

This is my 3rd year of reblooming Appleblossom. In past years it has produced multiple bloom stalks but this year only one, though that one is extremely tall and absolutely beautiful! I have never placed it outside in the summer --- it remains on my SE windowsill until I put it into dormancy in my basement just like you've shown in this video - leaving the leaves to die back naturally. My timing is off though because I've never had it bloom at Christmas -- it always blooms in late January for me: !

Yes I have noticed a longer life in the vase opposed to on the plant, maybe an extra week! As to double amaryllis I got a few this year and I am in love, especially the variety Alfresco. I also tried a butterfly variety -Papillio- which was amazing green with purple-red stripes. I tried a wax coated amaryllis just to see what that was about. The variety is -Picasso- and it did indeed bloom with smaller white with red edges flowers.

This is my first year growing amaryllis. So far, the two out of four that have bloomed have been lovely. When you talk about letting them go into dormancy in the fall, if I want to have them bloom in Jan or Feb again, when would I take them out if dormancy and if they're in pots do I replenish the soil or dump the soil they're in and start fresh? I've loved the ones you've shared with us you're growing; they're beautiful!

My amaryllis is big. The bulb is 7- diameter, the flower stem is 4. 5 ft (it must be propped up and tied or it will snap in half, the leaves are about 4 ft and the dark red flowers are 6- across. I let mine grow all year long in my house, near the picture window and never cut the leaves. I have had this plant for over 15 years. It blooms once a year around February. It sets in a 16- plastic pot and I water twice a week.

Where do you purchase your bulbs? I need a reliable source for more variety and strong bulbs. I grow many, but a little disappointed in their ability to return the following year, still uncertain if its worth the trouble of moving them outside and then back in for dormancy, only to have leaves and no flowers. I have Apple Blossom blooming right now, same as yours. one stalk with 4 flowers, one of my favorites.

I-m not sure of the variety I have but it is some of the last ones that my grandmother and aunt had in their yards. I-m hoping they will multiply and I can grow more since they haven-t been cared for very well in the past. I don-t have to winterize them by storing them but I can leave them in the ground for the winter since I-m in zone 8b. I love them! Learning so much more from you! Hugs and love from Texas!

Can you pls put the name of the amaryllis on the screen next time? Thank you for sharing with us your lovely collection of amaryllis. I have 3 bulbs that I bought in December of 2021. After it is done blooming, cut the stalk and treated it like houseplants. Then in sept I took it down the basement for dormancy. I took it back out in around November but right now, it just growing foliage but no flower stalk.

Does anyone else just feel so much better after looking at beautiful blooms? Ah! Just what I needed. I love my Exotic Star amaryllis, it-s just so unusual. I also noticed that cut amaryllis last longer (as long as 10 days. As for the dormancy, I tried so many times to have them rebloom without planting them outside and they just won-t do it. I may try again and will let you know. Great video!

My favorites are -Nymph-, -Denver- and -Stardust-. I bought a lot of them from my local garden store for less then 3 dollar each after the new year. The ordinary price was 30 dollars each. They are blooming and are gorgeous! I couldn-t believe my luck. From now on I-m only going to buy them when there is a sale because it don-t care when they-re blooming. I-m going to save them for next year.

That first amaryllis looks like it just has flower stalks. I bought one that came up with a really nice cluster of blooms. But no leaf stalk. The flowers are done but the leaf stalks are only a couple of inches. This plant was attacked by fungus gnats so I wonder if that has hurt the leaves. Will it die because there's no leaves?

Danielle your videos are wonderful. I am a flower person from way back. I did grow amaryllis many years ago but got away from it. Well after watching you video I now have a renewed interest thanks to you. Right now I have an Picotee amaryllis that I purchased thru the mail from a company called Breck. I am so glad I found you.

I had two new medium apple blossom amaryllis in the fall. I potted one up mid December. And it pushed out one stalk right away and bloomed well before Christmas. I continued on treating it as a houseplant and was surprised by another stalk the 3rd week in Jan. The blossoms were much smaller. Never saw that before!
