Back to the cabin on my friend's property. I notch some logs, split the base logs and talk about my philosophy of living simply. Music: Phoenix by Simon Alexander VERSE you came in for more but its more than you can might and in thats rotten youre ready to ignite stuck in a wicked fever as youre wating for a home and your cadance fails to bed a steady calm CHORUS hold on to your fire you feel a need to burn for days bygone and I know that so would anyone so dont let that fire go now VERSE listen to your reason which you seem to have ignored for you lack a way to trade your sore eyes for the blame but you wont learn just to make it through the night so the bad, bad dreams they take you spiraling down through the dark so just. CHORUS hold on to your fire you feel a need to burn for days bygone but I know that so would anyone so dont let that fire go now STICK at the most you strain it not to choke as the bitter pill is sold with hollow wine missing piece unfolding at the crease but dont you dare to go and light the fuse if you burn it down theres nothing left to loose so dont you dare to let that fire go now

I've watched your build videos casually over the years and I'm finally going back to watch them in chronological order. I appreciate when you stop to offer commentary it is always substantive and never vacuous. And yes, your videos have greatly inspired me. I leave behind my 9 to 5 in October. Not long after I plan to depart with my one-year-old golden retriever on the great adventure of acquiring undeveloped land somewhere to build a home and self-reliant lifestyle with my own hands. Thank you for being an inspiration to the rest of us.

Your thoughts on how to lead a good life sounded very authentic to me. But it also raised a question. I know my limits and I don't think that I could survive alone in the woods. Where did you learn all the stuff you are showing us. I am in the constuction business and we need lots of machinery to do basically what you are doing with your bare hands and an axe. How comes that you master all these techniques?

I SO admire that you want to build these cabins by hand tools alone. I have watched many videos of people using power tools and complaining all the way. I watched a full series on Dick Proenekke (Alone in the Wilderness) who built his cabin in Alaska in the 1960's with hand tools. He even showed how to make a locking door latch out of wood. Maybe check him out if you need any inspiration. Keep up the great work!

Shawn James; Your videos inspire and motivate me. I also use them to find a level and calm place for my head to be.
You remind me what the important things in life truly are.
Every thing about your videos is of tremendous help-- more than words can express here. Even when you ramble on
. Just kidding, kinda.
I especially like your reflections.
Shawn James, I appreciate you

Man I just started watching your videos tonight and I just paused it after you said it's up to you to make the change to write down that I am officially going on the hunt for some land to build a cabin and live in it. I can't tell you how excited I am to make the change. Thanks for the awesome videos and the inspiration. Can't wait to continue watching then do it myself.

I love what you are doing. Would you consider using an Alaskan chainsaw mill. If you would I think your build would be a bit more faster. Are you going debark the log walls. I sure would like to come out and help if I lived closer. would be a great project for me to help. Good idea to make the tripod to help you lift the logs for the walls. Be safe and have fun.

I have just had a thought watching you scribe and cut those notches Shawn, would it be possible to make a big enough bow saw, say with a 12 inch throat and about 18 inch blade made from a bandsaw blade? would that take a lot of work out of notching so you just have to use that beautiful curved gouge you have to finish it to size?

Love your philosophy! Reminds me of a verse in a song by the Eagles. The song is about a different subject, but the verse can be applied to so many situations, and it says, so often times it happens, that we live our lives in chains, and we never even know we have the key. So true for so many! Thanks for the inspiration

Depending on your skills and education, there are many employment opportunities where you will work 9 to 5 but you will be a half hour or less from the bush. It's a compromise but raising a family is all about the us and less about the me. But you are going to have to live up north. Enjoying the vids. Thanks.
