For 1 million people (ok lets go easy and replace people with families) with a land space of 130 acres each (100 football fields per inhabitant requires the size of france/ 210. 000 square miles) covered in trees, with water access and whatnot ) total consumption will be a very low guestimate of 120 Million 8 inch trees a year. This lifestyle is unsustainable transposed to just the population of canada (37 million) it would be only 2. 5% (or 7. 5% if you average size the family to 3) of the population who would already deforrest the landmass size of France EVERY YEAR.
One of the fastest growing trees is the Birch. which will grow about 30--40 feet in 20 years and have 8-16 inch diameter at that age So for every tree you cut you would have to replant at least 2-3 birch (of course monocultures suck) in order to offset cut rate, tree failing, fires, etc etc. You will cut down all older trees before the first one you planted even got old enough to harvest: p
Ofc this can be offset in one or the opposite direction by a myriad of other factors but just for the heck of it i tried this little math game: p

Be sure to plant a big asparagus patch if you re in the grow zone! It s good up to zone 3. It is such an easy perennial, and the roots go down 10 feet, so it is excellent to help stop erosion on a slope.
When I moved here to my place in VA, my son and I planted 1000 worth of bare root fruit trees. Four are all that are left. Four! Two figs and two pomegranates. The deer decimated them in the first summer. I planted three mulberries on the west side of the barn for summer shade. Used the tubes to protect them. They took off growing like weeds and the deer found them, too. I now have three nubs poking out of the ground.
I have no idea how anyone ever started a successful orchard. Thankfully, the deer are not attracted to my asparagus!
You should consider getting some cashmere goats. They love bracken and weeds so you would have adequate food for them. Use a scythe to cut the meadow by the creek for winter fodder, probably 15 bales for three goats. they can also browse in the forest.
The poop and bedding would make excellent compost. They would still need a mineral supplement, and a shelter. Housing them with chickens actually helps to keep the space warmer. Our barn had just a metal roof, so we put up the thick closed cell insulation. It had made a big difference in reducing the range of temperature variation.

It looks like it might be difficult to put the rest of those greenhouse clear panels on figuring the way you started it starting at the bottom and not even having the other pieces. I don't know if that's what's intended but seems to me starting with the top piece and working downward wont make it risky to damage any panels or glass pieces. Whatever they are. I don't know if that thing comes with an assembly manual or what. I've been wondering what you still drink while you're working if anything besides that chagga and tea. I don't know how you can keep going strong just drinking that stuff and coffee. I'd have to have some gatorade and lemonade, milk, orange juice too. Milk might be a hard thing for you get a hold of. Not sure. Anyways, I remember too much manual labor with not enough hydration, breaks and stretching is what gave me herniated disc ruptures in my back. Might be worth setting a timer for an hour or something for a hydration reminder.

Why not debark the (tall) poles when they're still flat and at bench level instead of having to climb a ladder? Yrs ago I debarked live edge pine planks used as siding for my mountain cabin. I quickly made some saw horses (=debarking horses, and could then do the entire job easily without having to bend over. Over the yrs I've learned that making suitable jigs, tools and equipment for a job quickly can make an otherwise tedious and tuff job so much easier.
Also, I had been very reluctant to plant any exotic species in the woods without double protecting them against browsing. Such species are normally like candy for browsers like moose, deer, mice, rabbits. I say this as I have tried to plant Swiss pine (Pinus cembra) at my cabin only to find them gone within a week (deer.

I ve traveled for a living for the past 22 years. China, Korea, Japan, Africa, Europe, Middle East, US, Russia, South America, Australia, Tasmania etc etc. In France now heading for the UK. Pretty much 11 months a year on the road. I built ( Pat Wolfe shell) a beautiful log house on 5 acres just outside Ottawa and I miss Canada. Nice to know that your home is your favorite place to be especially when you ve seen most of the planet. I sit in my hotel room and watch Shawn s videos for hours. It s an important connection. Not sure if he realizes the value his work has on my daily routine and over all general mood.

You have a wonderful place to do your building and the green house is really a plus for you and I m happy for you and kalie when she was running after the duck that was flying on top of your head that was so funny and of course she is trained to get them and you will have a better place easy to build your where you have food running around you all the time and soon you will have your cabin and everything and finally have the life that you want to live and you deserve but the rain is crazy this year here also and that is slowing you down but you always have something to do and you have fun that what counts

Hopefully once that greenhouse project is done as far as the assembly and your on your own you will be more in control.
There can be a lot of stress even in the Self Reliance Life. You put that on yourself because your so consciences and that is not a bad thing.

It s so exciting to watch u building a new homestead, family helping too was awesome. The green house is looking great, out house, and all the buildings along with the gardening. I DONT KNOW IF IT IS JUST MY PHONE OR A PROBLEM WITH U-TUBE BUT I HAVE TO HIT THE LIKE BUTTON 3 OR 4 TIMES TO GET IT TO LIGHT UP. I wanted to let u know that in case it s a U tube problem that it could cause not as many likes to show up for you that should show up.

I am just going to stand over this hole he's digging and see if I can elicits a response to the toy he likes to throw every now and then. I'll just drop it right here, right where he's going to put this next post. Makes you wonder if it was actually Pavlov running the experiment, or the dog!
