Building a Front Door for My Off Grid Log Cabin, Ep25

The first frost of the season has arrived so I am focusing on doors, windows and exterior finishes to keep the cold and the rodents out. Since I don't have time right now to fully carve the front door of the cabin, I design and build a heavy pine and walnut door with a 3 thick wood insert that I can pull out of the door to carve inside the warm cabin as I have time over the winter. A friend visits to hunt and explore the wilderness around the cabin with me and as a result, I don't make much progress on the building this week. It's such an incredible time of year to be out in the woods so I'm happy to take time of off building, gardening and harvesting for a few days. Ronnie: Look up the health and nutrition benefits of that sumac! Vitamins include C and some B s, and it has healthy fats and carbs, as well as fiber.
In culinary use, it is a substitute for lemons and makes a faux lemonade. It has a really nice flavor. It is an awesome seasoning for meats and veggies, too. As a spice, it is often just blended with salt. You should cultivate in your margins, and harvest it!

Love your videos, Sir. Very inspiring. I am currently stuck in the rat race, but as soon as time and finances permit, I would love to follow your footsteps. Building a cabin with my son seems to be my end game as of late. Following you for all these years have definitely helped me make better decisions on how I want my family to move forward. Thanks for the videos and advice!

What a door. Bear-proof I would say - and maybe even nuclear bomb proof too. Simple construction in a sense with no joints but the sheer weight and physics of the door makes it very sturdy. Wonder what hinges will hold the thing up and also move it on its pivot. Looks great even at this stage but as you progress towards finishing, it will be a superb home. Thanks again for sharing.

Shawn, I can't wait to see the door when it's finished and has a coat of stain or clear coat on it. Then the door will really shine and look awesome and by how thick it is, bear proof as well. Now that the weather is cooling off you can really make progress on the cabin. The cabin will be a work of art that's for sure. Take Care Brother

Love the way you play with Cali, you two love each other so much and I'm sure your family share that love for her. Your family has to be so proud of all you do, your wife probably helps when she can. It is awesome what you are building and I look forward to watching you work on the inside of your log cabin house this winter. Great videos

Aaaaahhhhh, those last scenes. You and Cali on rocky edge overlooking the valley forest and winding river and best shot of all the beautiful red maple leaves. Warmed my being a born and raised Northern Ontario girl, gone from home many years. Beautiful video. They bring me Home continuously.
Many Thanks

I ve watched this guy s videos over the years (since 2018) and I m in awe over his talents. The work he does is impeccable and I wish only the best of success and protection for him, his dog and family while he is managing his life in the wilderness alone. I m speechless!

I love watching you videos. They make my work day sitting in front of my computer much better. Next I will watch Emily s. Todays video was a milestone with closing in the cabin and putting down your mattress. And sweet Cali was so cute as always posing for the camera.

You got me on this one. The massive middle section has to be 1 inch proud of the surrounding frame. A beveled insert? I can't imagine the amount of work that takes by hand. In any case, it's massive. Goes with the majestic logs. I am in awe of your patience and vision.

That door will keep the bears out for sure. Your homestead is looking so great. I do my best thinking sitting in the woods amongst the trees. It is so peaceful. This time of year it is especially beautiful with the Fall colour palette. Enjoy the Fall!

what kind of wood did you use for the door? i think going all winter long off grid would be very scary to me. but if youve learned how, its not so scary. i would think the woods critters looking for a winter den have been admiring your cabin.

Great to see how the cabin is coming along. Just watched Emily harvesting the potatoes, with your help. Take care and stay safe. Thanks for sharing your experiences. Hugs to you all including Cali. Best wishes from the UK.
