Cabin life is not easy but to me the variety of tasks required to develop and maintain a successful wilderness homestead are very interesting and rewarding. During the last few days of winter, completing the interior of my log cabin is high priority before I turn my attention to the outdoor kitchen build in the coming days. Between construction projects, I pull a couple of venison hams out of the freezer and cut them into thin strips and dry/smoke them on the fire. With days reaching above freezing temperatures, my daughter Emily and sister help tap maple trees and prepare the evaporator for making maple syrup. Now that warmer weather is here, I shave my head and beard.

the temps are climbing here in Wv Shawn. 60s then 70s coming, were dealing with high winds. got my Solar panels and wiring up and in. i can switch either way. got a 2000 Bluetti coming, i got two panels to the East, and Two to the West. im happy. may be now i can put a freezer in. i can run my internet all night without gen. lites to. your place is looking so good, i do the same thing with the clippers. im thinking of getting those small led lights for inside. the low on power, and bright. waiting on your videos Shawn, stay safe man.

Shawn I was wondering if it would be a good idea to cook a pizza in an outdoor earthen oven on a big pizza spatula paddle that you could preheat sticking into the earthen oven and just keep it in there with the pizza on it with it's handle sticking out far enough to grab it and take your pizza out anytime real easy on the spatula paddle. But I don't know how well that would work. Might be worth a try in the future. A preheated pizza spatula. Got to figure out how to get the pizza on it safely though somehow in a smart way.

Thanks for this video, as I have often wanted to see you maintaining your hand-tools, Shawn, and I like that finish which you use on your kitchen counters & doors too. Like you I consider my books to be good friends with whom I spend many pleasant and relaxing hours. That jerky looks delicious. Can you share with us what are the marinade ingredients please? I guess that the hair-cut & shave means that warmer weather is around the corner soon?

This cabin feels so much more like a home than that previous one you built Shawn. I know I said it on a video before, but it's true. It feels so warm and cozy just by looking at it on video. And it's much more bright and airy on the inside unlike the previous one. Always seemed a bit stuffy and cramped in it. Anyway, the cabin is turning out beautifully. It's a testament to your craftsmanship Shawn, and thank you for bringing us along.

Shawn, you cabin looks fabulous. Congrats my friend. A month ago, I got one of those flat hand saws, works fantastic for small projects I do. I recently make dowels by hand. I will never buy another. I always enjoy watching the making of maple syrup there through the years. And of course your photography. Have a great week.

That's really amazing what you are doing in your new cabin.
Running water in your kitchen certainly could increase your level of comfort on it.
Try to get it from the creek in front of your cabin, using a ram pump to do it! It will be awesome to see it!
Congrats!
Regards from Brazil!

You remind me so much of my brother-in-law and his ingenuity in making things. I enjoy watching, seeing all the projects you do in your cabin and wide range of tools and natural supplies you use in your construction. Love your stove and watching you use it. Callie is a wonderful companion.

So very happy to see your beautiful lady visiting you and encouraging you to shave. We can now also enjoy seeing your kind and loving face. Love seeing Cali. Thank you for sharing all your hard work and thoughts with us. The cabin looks so homey and welcoming. Stay safe and warm. Texas

Another great video. Two questions for Shawn: 1. How far is that workshop building from your new house? 2) Last year you seeded several big branches with mushroom seeds and cover them with wooden lids. What happened with that activity? Have you harvested any of those mushrooms?

Good morning Shawn, the cabin is surely coming together and becoming a home. It's hard to stay motivated but the end goal is worth it. I look forward to the outdoor kitchen, wood shed / storage building and addition to the cabin! Have a great weekend!

How far from your cabin is the syrup trees and shop? This may sound strange but when ever you have an outside fire andyou are cooking something it brings back smells and memories of when I was a back country guard for the forest service so thank you!

I am in love with this cabin. You have done an outstanding job and I am so looking forward for a video showing a tour of the inside. I have a question: How long do you stay in it? does your wife stay with you or are you alone most of the time?
reply

Hi Shawn, I don't say this to many men but, you are one of my heros. I'm a better person because I'm inspired your daily efforts. Now, my partner wants me to build a woodshed, so thanks for that! lol. I'll start with a birdhouse, or something.

Thanks Mr. Shawn for the new episode. New image coming spring. Great woodwork in the cabin. To supply the cabin with water, can't you extract water from the lake with an electric or solar pump? Is it possible? Is it legal? Happy weekend.

I gather you have had a dump of snow recently, it s still winter here too. This season is a good one for syrup, Lanark Highlands sugar producers are experiencing good volumes of running sap. The planting of seeds is not far off either.
