Off Grid Property Tour Managing the Forest for Wildlife and Food David: I'm very sorry to hear that you have been unwell for so long. However it's something to be cognisant of.
You're in your early 50s I guess and clearly fit, but my sense is that it's getting harder year by year and with everyone you might be able to sustain the forestry but your health is a lottery. No guarantees no matter how well you live.
It's great to be self reliant, but it's hard work and as the years go on it will get harder. Of late I've wondered if you are seeking a utopia which will eventually kill you, because as the years go on you will not be able to sustain the punishing regime of living off grid as you do. I guess I've lost sight of your vision of a few years ago. What your videos seem to show is not a good life, but just dealing with one damn thing. after another. Honest view.

You were speaking of the difficulty of generating electricity at your site, have you considered wood gasification? It is possible to generate electricity on a homestead using wood as a heat source. This can be done through a process called wood gasification. Wood gasification involves heating wood in an oxygen-limited environment, causing it to break down into a mixture of gases, including carbon monoxide, hydrogen, and methane, which can then be used as fuel to power a generator.
To set up a wood gasification system on your homestead, you will need a wood gasifier unit, which is a device that converts wood into gas. You will also need a generator to convert the gas into electricity. In addition, you will need a source of wood to burn, such as wood chips, pellets, or logs.
Setting up a wood gasification system can be complex and requires a good understanding of mechanics, safety procedures, and electricity. Therefore, it's recommended that you consult with an expert in wood gasification technology to help you design and install a system that is safe and efficient for your homestead.

Shawn, I have 200 ac on the shield surrounded by crown in southern Ontario too. I was able to survey the lines using OBM mapping which illustrates the lots and concessions. Its not a legal survey of course. The trick to determining which of the many online mapping systems provides the most accurate representation of your lot lines in your area is to find a rock pile (monument) along a right of way and then take a GPS shot on it and overlay that shot on the mapping system to see whether it it where you expect it to be. Some twps are surveyed such that the rock piles are down the middle of the ROW, like mine, some aren't. I have a ROW as one of my lot lines. I also have a survey grade GNSS (GPS) which affords centimeter accuracy if you can get a relatively open canopy shot at the satellites. I could go on but this would get long. I can provide more detail if you like. Just reply. Great video.

There is unrest in the forest
Trouble with the trees
For the maples want more sunlight
And the oaks ignore their pleas
The trouble with the maples
(And they're quite convinced they're right)
They say the oaks are just too lofty
And they grab up all the light
But the oaks can't help their feelings
If they like the way they're made
And they wonder why the maples
Can't be happy in their shade
There is trouble in the forest
And the creatures all have fled
As the maples scream, Oppression
And the oaks just shake their heads
So the maples formed a union
And demanded equal rights
They say, The oaks are just too greedy
We will make them give us light
Now there's no more oak oppression
For they passed a noble law
And the trees are all kept equal
By hatchet, axe, and saw
The Trees, Rush

I am totally intrested and have learned allot from you Shawn and I must say that for me it all started whenever I first discovered Dick Pronekkee He and You and a few other great men have drasticly changed my abilitys and creations on the inside and the outside of my home.
thanks so much for sharing your knowledge and skills and that cooler is very cool I will pass that on to some friends I really think that if one day every surface of that cooler and many other surfaces should be soloar panels the tops of cars and many other surfaces of lots of things if that makes any sense to you at all but Im guessing that it does since you mentioned two or three things throughout the video that I myself have done and thought of stay healthy and may there be no bugs this summer

well i appreciate you taking us on tour so to speak. i agree with the assessment. you got a lot of work there (but it's a lot of fun to do. does Canada Forest Service make available sprigs and plantings to re-forest private holdings? (some of the states in the USA have that service for nominal fee. but you got to be first in line they go fast. from your video tour there, i would think that oaks would add to the diversity and so i'd cut out all those conifers down by your stream (those conifers make great critter condos when you pile them up) and maybe plant white oaks down by your stream and definitely as many berry vines as you can get. i love taking care of my woods and it's great to see other persons doing the same with their woods.

Keep in mind that number 1, Nature has taken care of itself for long before Europeans arrived. Millions of years. These ignoramuses that infiltrated the Native population.
Having said that, number 2 is Mother's and Grand Mothers of the forest. These have been for a long time, been the seeders of the forest. That's how generations are able to continue and keep their species thriving.
The only reason we humans want to Preserve, is for economics. Economics is an infection. sorry. invention that's infected our ability to utilize wisdom. You live on a grain of sand on a beach of trillions of other grains of sand among septtillions of other grains of sand, in the Universe. And in being extremely conservative. Live. well.

How many acres of land do you have? Someone needs to build Shawn a small forwarder so when he cuts the trees down, limbs them, and cuts to length he can load them with the grapple crane into the log racks on the forwarder. One that's small enough he can get it through the forest easily but heavy duty with hydraulics strong enough to lift the logs he's harvesting. Somewhat bigger than a four wheeler, maybe twice as big would probably work good for him. He would definitely put it to work there over the years. If my body would let me do it I would but I've gotten to a point that I can't do much anymore which near bout drives me up the wall. Oh well.

Hope you will be better?
Property limits: Here( in France, there is a good thing to clear any property with the neighbors, the mesures are registered with their position by an Act of the state.
A surveyor approved by the state could indicate the position of each corners of the property and materialized by a iron rebar planted very deeply (Lenth over 60cm.
Those corners are often materialized by some surveyoir's terminal by a 12x12x12 cm concrete cube on the top and painted red on top surface.
It is strictly forbiden to move them except by a state surveyor.
Bon courage and stay safe.

Walking a familiar forest with a trained forester gives one a new perspective on what you are seeing. They can point out the evidence of prior use of the land through the types and relative sizes and provide a narrative of how the various species populate or re-populate a given area and in what sequence. A monoculture is sure to be more sterile than mixed growth and you are being a proper steward of the land for the future of all plants and animals in this growing zone. Well done as usual, Shawn! Two things to keep in mind. When you thin stands of large trees you increase the probably of blow down. In addition, the older trees sequester more carbon at a faster rate than young trees. Management of forests is largely governed by your goals and what you start with. I would also note that access can be a critical issue. I did not get the services of a forestry consultant in a timely manner and so I found that access to manage the limited land I own was difficult if not impossible.

Also take into consideration weather control issues.
The spray you see high up in the sky that scatters out into a white haze, is causing super high UV rays which will cause plants to produce smaller leaves and kill micro nutrients in the soil.
Also clear back any trees that if would fall may hit the cabin. I say that because the military will continue to produce higher intensity storms to push the climate change agenda. Do not be deceived!

ill say a prayer for you, but if you had the snake oil could be making the bug last longer, you need to detox the gut & blood, NAC & Black cumin seeds for detoxing the kidney & Stomach, Pine needle tea & Dandelion root tablet or from the garden, to detox the blood, all anti parasitic & protect healthy DNA, to boost the immune system, take 1000MG of vitamin C & D3, Zinc & Magnesium for seven days, start to consume honey 4 times a day, good luck

Forest land management is the art and science of managing forest succession. You can remove trees and vegetation to return the forest to an earlier stage of succession but there is little to do to speed up a later stage of succession other than thinning, planting, and encouraging growth of select trees. Nature does this with time, fire, drought, floods wind, hurricanes, and tornadoes and also browsing of animals and beaver activity.

Mr. James:
You can probably get a blade less wind turbine. A small one that can be placed on the roof. You will have to get a generator for it and adapt it. There are some used for camping? Not sure the price. But thought to bring it up.
There is also new technology to harvest electricity from fog or the air. And also there is a separate technology to harvest water from fog. It s cool to learn about.
