Building a Timber Frame Outdoor Kitchen Alone at My Off Grid Log Cabin

I finish milling timbers from trees I cut down around the cabin and continue building the timber frame structure of the outdoor kitchen. The frames are heavy so I use the ATV anchored to the cabin logs and a maple tree to winch the walls into place. The forest kitchen is over 11 feet high so it's challenging to get the walls up and roof boards installed alone, but I have a system in place now so it's just another day or two to finish the frame and then I can start finishing the walls and order metal for the roof. Moose and beaver are very active around the cabin right now - calf moose and baby birds and other wildlife are regular visitors. On a hot day, my daughter Emily and I go for a short paddle in the canoe to catch a couple of small northern pike for dinner. Peter: I've spent a lot of my life fishing in Canada and the mosquitoes can be absolutely horrible, funny how no one mentions them, you can hear the little turds buzzing around the microphone like flying vultures. It's obvious why Shawn is wearing the mosquito mask to protect himself from the disgusting bugs. I've been looking forward to the outdoor kitchen, thanks Shawn.

I am a potter and it takes me all day to make handles for a baking dish, create a lid and secure everything so the top stays on, making sure there are no cracks all the while trying to keep symmetry and balance for the actual piece SO, all these years watching you build and build and build and build continues to inspire me to take my time, every piece of the puzzle is just as important as the one before and the one after beautiful work on the outdoor to be screened in kitchen Shawn Happy Father s Day

This video was absolutely amazing. Your filming, hard work building with such detail, showing work on the cabin inside, fantastic canoe water trip, in your garden, the aerial moose and beaver, fantastic music. Beautiful combination of nature and your work. It conveyed a peace and appreciation of living in the wilderness. Loved every second. But then, I really have enjoyed your videos. Every video just seems to get better. And of course, Calli. Good dog

Shawn, aside from some sketches, we haven't seen any line drafts. Do you have layouts for the buildings or do you just do a ton of measuring? I'm amazed that you seem to know just what needs to go where, and when it needs to be put there. I might guess, several 'Cabin Building' books are in use, but it does seem like you're a natural cabin builder already! Pet Cali for us and tell me if her last name isn't 'Flower'.

Those mosquitoes sounded huge and hungry. Many years ago we lived 600 miles in country of the mountains of Veracruz Mexico. There was a tree that the Indians would burn a small branch in a pot with a wire handle. Swing it through each room, behind doors, over beds all the corners. That smoke scared all the giant mosquitoes away for the night.

You are an amazing person Shawn. Your family are very lucky to have you. I didn't think there was another person on this earth like my dad who could do anything by himself. Watching you lift that last piece brought back so many memories. Love Cali to pieces and hope she has a good summer without getting over heated. Thank you for the videos.

The mosquitos look to be very big and very much a mass of swarming buzzing (and biting ) insects. any way to get rid of them? Maybe you could burn a lot of those fragrant circle things that they do not like? Anyway, it is good that you can work and cope with them at the same time. Hope the mosquito problem goes away soon. :)

I love seeing mortise and tenon work and doing it by hand shows dedication. Keep up the good work. If you continue to stand frame as you go, there will only be a true building surface for one more. Maybe stack them dry fitted until you have them all, then stand them up?

Boy, I really enjoyed that video. As a muzzleloader gun builder/instructor it looked like you were enjoying the times when you could just hog wood out without worrying about the finer work to come. The final drone shots and such were really great as well. BEAUTIFUL country.

for me, that cloud of insects would take the joy out of it and drive me out - Far out. There was an old tale from way back that claimed that hordes of insects would cause herds of caribou to run for many miles to plunge into a lake or river. I tend to believe it.

Hi Shawn, be careful mate, don't injure yourself = referring to 0. 32 = that's a lot of weight, remove trip hazards and don't carry stuff that's too heavy! Things could have gone pear shaped and things could have rapidly escalated. We love your video's.

I am sure you have explained this earlier but I am curious why you are builing the outdoor kitchen with such a high floor to roof dimension? And will it be all screened in? Great video as always. I so much look forward to each new posting. Thanks.

Those mosquitoes are _clearly_ audible more than once on the mic. I am trying to nod off and I start having mosquito attack flashbacks! Visible swarms as well! It must be beserk!
Unlivable outside in the spring/summer without the net hood.

Ah, what a way to eat, sitting down on the lumber you cut, enjoying meat you harvested from the wild. Cooking it over a wood burning stove. Reminds me when on my grandparents farm, deep in the woods of Maine, nearly seven decades in the past.

That outdoor kitchen will still be standing long long after your great grand children are long gone. Great job and it's a thrill to watch you build something. I know that you have to show some your gardening but this is what turned my crank!

I live for your drone video passages. Think of this: Drone footage like this but one for each month and season of the year, like a calendar. Now that would be something! You've become an accomplished nature videographer. Mahalo Nui.

You couldn t have got this ready at a more perfect time, with what we re facing! Economic collapse and complete turmoil is about to tear North American apart! Good luck, you have a perfect location! Wish the rest of us good luck!

The place is really coming along nicely, it looks great, but when you were talking about the overhang you had a bird singing it's tail feathers off that was all I could hear while you were talking it was having a good time!

I found myself itching from seeing the misquotes and hearing them. I don t know if you make your own vanilla but you can use some on skin for a natural repellent. Just dab on rag spread around your exposed skin
