I aim to convey my thoughts and theory about what I think it takes to not only be on the show, but also what it takes to be successful at wilderness living, and to a lesser, but still significant extent, how to do so called survival in general. I will also help illustrate my thoughts by overlaying video scenes from my most recent experiences in nature. These are not my only experiences in the woods, but rather a small snapshot of things I have been working on over the last few years. Keep in mind that my history as a woodsman goes well back into my youth. if these people knew to use the siberian fire lay, move their tarp shelter to where the squaw wood is, use the gravity-fed Dakota firepits to heat big rocks, have a raised wooden bed, and to make different handles for the Cold steel shovel, they'd realize that they dont need the axe and saw. Since Jordan butchered and skinned a 900 lb moose with just a multitool, maybe we can finally overcome the bs put out by the custom knifemakers. You do NOT want to handicap yourself by taking a belt knife, instead of a modified Crunch multitool. If you remove the handle from the shovel, it's a pretty good ukluk knife, if you should be so lucky as to need to do what Jordan did. If you wont be on the sea, you have to take the 3 lb block of sea salt. If you will be on the sea, take the 2 lb ration of pemmican instead. If you can't make a debris bed and a net bag full of debris to use as a blanket over you, , you dont belong on this show. Until it's freezing cold consistently, you need a tarp work awning vs rain. But once it's cold, you can use that 10x10 tarp as a second wall for the tent, with dry debris between the tarps. With this, the debris bag, hot rocks under the raised bed, and all the clothing that they let you take, you'll be fine down to 10F. Once it's that cold, it will be pointless to bother with foraging. So you then just create a dugout shelter, 4x4x8 ft, or a stone/log (and mud/grass mortar) above ground shelter of the same size, stuff it with dry debris and just lay in it. Eat most of your dried fish and meat cold.
The entire rainsuit will be your water container. Your body heat and the foot thick layer of compressed debris wont let it freeze. Refill it once a week, get a hot meal/drink while you're stone-melting ice or snow and boiling it, in a tarp lined hole in the ground. A small person can win this (without being fat and lucky) by catching 200, 000 calories. A big guy, to win without losing 50+ lbs of bodyweight, will have to catch 300, 000 calories. The net weirs are VERY capable of catching 50 ducks in a month, 110, 000 calories, 300 lbs of fish in that same month, 100, 000 calories. You have at least a decent chance of catching a fat 200 lb bear or hog, 150, 000 calories, or at least a couple of 100 lb deer, 35, 000 calories each, and a bunch of coons, possums, skunks, weasels, foxes, wolverines, porcupines, etc, with your snares, vertical junglewhips, and treblehooks. NOTICE that I dont say anything postive about actual bowhunting or fishing with hook and line? that's cause such things are a waste of time and calories, with extremely rare exceptions. Sure, take 3 of your arrows as 3 pc take-down types from Dave Canterbury and always carry your slingbow as you do other things. Be READY for the fluke-luck happening, but remember that such is all it is. It is useful, sometimes, to be able to sling a stone into a raft of watefowl, making them move from where your weirs are not present, perhaps to land where your decoys, baits and weirs are waiting for them.
Take the 5 qt skillet and lid, not the 2 qt cookpot. you want to be able to boil water quickly and easily. Boil all your food if you dont want to get sick and if you want max calories out of it. Remember to drink the broth. Make a pontoon outrigger raft, poncho with hood, breechclout and leggings. Wear those, the water sandals, and nothing else, when you have to go out in the rain or on the raft. Wet clothing is worse for you in the cold, especially if it's also windy, than being naked and then you have to dry out the clothing, which is a huge waste of space, firewood, time and energy.

mostly what it takes is to break the regulatons about hunting and fishing. You use gillnets, use net weirs, suspend baited treblehooks for mammals, ignore hunting seasons and bag limits, use baiting, use lights at night, none of which you can practice or show on youtube. You always get dumped off in the late fall, so plants will never be much of a source of food for you. Fat is extremely important and very hard to get. Several people have had chances to arrow a bear or a seal, and didn't even have a bow to do it with. The slingbow needs to be one of your 10 picks, cause it's a lot easier to always have at hand, and cause you can use baked clay balls as -ammo-. Forget rocks, they dont fly straight. You CAN, however, from concealment, use the rocks to make a flock of birds move from where you dont have any baited weirs, in the hope that when they do land again, it will be at your weirs. Dont come out of concealment for a while, hit or miss with such shots (or with arrows. cause you dont want the fowl to associate you with being long-range danger. If you know to take the 100 yd roll of duct tape, you can fletch lots of field made arrow shafts with it and such arrows will float, letting you recover them with your pontoon out rigger raft. If you want them to have a real effect on fowl at long range, you'll have to make a bladed, serrated, fire-hardened head and lash it onto the arrow's shaft. Merely whittling a pencil point on the shaft is likely to let the stricken bird escape your ability to retrieve it (before it's rotted or been eaten by some predator.

I know that you put this video out a long time ago but I am just getting to it. Great explanations and insight. One of my good friends told me that in a relationship the woman is the heart and the man is the brain. The woman works off of emotion and the man works off of common sense and just what needs to be done (most of the time. What he said was one cant live without the other and they feed off of each other working together. You are the definition of the brain and doing what is necessary to get the task done. I am really glad that you have put out some videos talking about male masculinity because I think it is being attacked and treated like it is a horrible thing by some people and the truth is that we need more of it now more than ever. Any not trying to run on but thank you for all that you do. I know that this doesn't have much to do with this video but to me it did because you are out there being a man and providing for you family being a good husband and father. More kids need this kind of -training- for lack of a better word instead of sitting inside in front of the tv, get outside, enjoy nature and really start living. Again thank you from one man to another.

even tho they are clearing -3000--4000 a day out there, I doubt that any of these spoiled brats can bring themselves to do nothing but make cordage and weave netting, all day, every day, for 2 weeks. The fowl are going to migrate, and the fish are going to move to deep water, where you probably can't touch them. So you need to get very busy making and setting those net weirs, along with making and setting baited treblehooks for predators. You have to get rid of the latter, so that they cannot be raiding your net weirs, snares or food caches. You also need to be baiting the game trails for ungulates and bears. Bears are going to hibernate soon. A 200 lb bear offers 150, 000 calories about half of it from fat. So it can win this challenge for you, all by itself, or damned near so. Bears can smell a stink bait for miles, and they are very much forced to fatten up for winter. The chances of big game being on your little 5 mile square area are quite small, so you'll have to bait them to you and your best chances of doing that are with bears and pits full of fish and fowl heads and guts.

I'd not take a single thing that everyone else has taken, without modifications. I'd not take the bow, cause a slingbow is handier and more versatile. The 5 qt skillet makes more sense than the 2 qt pot, I's not the sleeping bag, the axe, saw, or belt knife, nor the paracord nor the gillnet, the small hooks, treblehooks, or brass or carbon steel snaring wire, cause the other stuff is more versatile and/or you can field make substitutes for those things. You can make cordage, temporary box -hoop-traps, and netting out of the tarps and hammock. There's better stuff to take. and much better things to do than fishing with a pole and line. Once it's cold, you'll burn more calories fishing with hook and line than you get back. Ditto small game hunting (with a bow. You dont bother with unbaited snares or traps and dont bother to set them until you seen signs of critters taking the baits. Then you dont have to run the trap- line several times a day, you see, wasting calories. You run it once every couple of days, The baited treblehooks start catching predators, fowl and fish right away.

noobdy who's likely to last 3+ months is EVER going to be allowed on the show. Whomever let Jordan on probably got fired and you can bet your butt that the selection crew got chewed out and will be VERY unlikely to let anyone on the show who has any sort of ability to feed themselves. Woniya knew a lot of stuff, but she didn't know to make lots of netting out of the tarps, , use it to make net-weirs for fowl as well as fish. She didn't know to make 16 small treblehooks out of the 25 large single hooks and set them mostly for predators, but at first, some for fish and fowl. Once the nets are producing, all of them should be set for predators. You MUST get rid of predators and hopefully you can eat them, cause they are eating YOUR game. She didn't know to twist some of the snare wire into 3 or 6 strand cables and use those cables to make snares that could hold big animals to heavy drag logs. These are your main chances to get enough food to win without being fat and lucky. Jordan was not fat, but he certainly was lucky and he'll be the first to admit it.

none of these people have any outdoor experience, or they'd know how easy it is to cut/tear narrow strips off of a tarp, twist those strips to add strength and weave the resulting cordage into netting. they dont even know to keep their shelters small, portable (until winter hits, at least) and to keep fire out of their shelters. They dont even know to keep debris roofs wetted down. They can't even figure out that they need to dig a pit, before the ground freezes, and line it with a chunk of tarp, and line the tarp with sand or gravel, so that they can use hot stones to melt/snow or ice, boil it for safe drinking and have liquid water for dampening debris roofs. :-) Not a one of them has ever known to cut up the 20x20 tarp and only a couple have known to take the 12x12 tarp as one of their 10 items. You badly need all the cover/cordage element that you can get on this challenge.

Loved the video, however you knowledge of nutrition needs a little work. The body has no need for external carbs, none. And I'm not sure where you got the idea that a meat based diet needs to be 80% fat? The brain functions well on ketones and the body converts protein into useable sugars for the brain. You might try a prolonged keto diet 6 months or so, before your next extended survival trip. Once the body gets fat adapted your -craving- of carbs you mention will no longer be. Your body will be very happy converting fat and protein into energy, and the carbs you find will just be a bonus energy source. My thoughts.

They Want people who make -GOOD- tv. They don't want people who actually are poor and who actually live this life daily. Because it would not make for -great- tv.
The ones who Actually live it. Are behind the sences as your Experts gauging wither half timers, pretender actually can handle the harshness of lifing off grid for generation.

Just remember its TV. Their goal isn't to test your survival skills, its to make money off advertising by having high ratings and entertaining as many people as possible. You could be a complete trainwreck of a survival expert, but if you're fun to watch. guess who gets the call?
