We eat Venison, Black Walnuts, Pine Nuts, Maple Candy, Apples, Chokecherries, CranBerries, Acorn Flour, Bear Fat, Leaks, Blueberries, and Mushrooms. Ep 1: Ep 2: Ep 3: Since partaking in The Wilderness Living Challenge we focused on locating, storing and preserving foods which are broadly available. This is the subject of our current weekend. From there we could add food that was currently in season including waterfowl such as ducks and goose as well as grouse. Small game species also open in the fall including squirrel and rabbit. Roots and tubers including cattail and wapato are also ideal to harvest in the fall, as the starches concentrate into the lower portions of the plant at this time. As we discovered, laws and harvest regulations are highly prohibitive when trying to live off the land. Navigating this river system showed an abundance of beaver numbering about a dozen with just a 1 hour paddle. High in fat, these would make a great addition to our caloric requirements. You guys got spearmint berries and wood sorrel out where you are at? I always thought wood sorrel would be great for seasoning kinda like a lemony flavor and it grows like weeds where I'm from also the burdocks I like to mark where they are and find them closer to winter time so the root has more sugar in it plus ferns head and the cattail tops cause well I like asparagus I'm just wondering if maybe these aren't as common in your area I've tried doing some of this myself lol but I cheat mostly modern off a river not far from civilization like I can see the city lights I'm so close but loving the videos since I don't get out much anymore since I'm epileptic at least I can still experience it through these videos

Pine nuts have a shell that's why they are tasting like wood, they are small because they are not ripe! After they are harvested you then roast them, so many was to cook them, if you eat to many they will give you a stomach ache! Here in New Mexico we have a tradition to go out and pick them in the fall, there's so many was to do that, it's our state nut!
So much fun to harvest them!

I like the idea of including items collected from previous seasons because it's more realistic to assume that -wild- humans would stockpile items to include in their diet during times of scarcity and also to ration certain items over time to maintain balance in their diet. Thanks for making this series. I've been watching non-stop for the past 4 days.

Nothing wrong with fresh roadkill. One night I drove up to the liquor store and on the way back was a freshly hit cottontail that wasnt their on the way to the store so it was super freshly hit like with five minutes. Hardly any damage to it so I scoped it up, took it home and popped her in the crockpot. Yummly

Quick question if you don't mind: How come you didn't put the duck out of it's misery asap? Honestly, I never hunted for the meat I ate.
Edit: Nevermind, I see this has been addressed.

How long did you cook that duck in there? A friend of mine did shoot a duck some time and he said it wasn't that delicious, maybe because he didn't cook or prepared it right?
