MOST sources say that mayapple are TOXIC. Let's push the boundaries of wild foods and really test their edibility. Sources claim that MAYAPPLE are toxic in large quantity and will send you to the hospital, especially if you eat the seeds. I put myself through a series of experiments to test this ubiquitous wild food claim. Why is this important? Because no one else is doing this! No one, that I know, has ever eaten 27 mayapple in one sitting to see just how toxic mayapple really are. What is too many mayapple to eat all at once? Are mayapple really toxic at all, or is this just a case of bad information feeding into bad information in a never ending chain. Are the sources misinformed, has anyone really confirmed or denied mayapples toxicity? Let's myth-bust mayapple! Thanks for Sam Thayer for sending me an advanced copy of Incredible Wild Edibles. BUY IT NOW: Sam has also written The Foragers Harvest: A Guide To Identifying, Harvesting and Preparing Wild Plants as well as Nature's Garden: A Guide To Identifying, Harvesting and Preparing Wild Plants. Are mayapple poisonous? Can you eat mayapple? How many mayapple can you eat? Are mayapple toxic? Are mayapple good to eat? From Wiki: Podophyllum is an herbaceous perennial plant in the family Berberidaceae, described as a genus by Linnaeus in 1753. [3][4] In the past, several species were included in the genus, but all but one have been transferred to other genera (Dysosma, Pilea, and Sinopodophyllum. The one remaining species is Podophyllum peltatum, with common names mayapple, American mandrake, wild mandrake, [6] and ground lemon. It is widespread across most of the eastern United States and southeastern Canada. The claim made in Wiki: The unripe green fruit is toxic. The ripened yellow fruit is edible in small amounts, though when consumed in large amounts the fruit is poisonous. The rhizome, foliage and roots are also poisonous. Mayapple contains podophyllotoxin, which is highly toxic if consumed, but can be used as a topical medicine

that's exactly what teachers do who have no real-world working experience other than going to school. they repeat what they were told having personally experienced nothing themselves outside of a classroom. just simply repeaters of what they've been told. part of what's wrong with the world. like when a hollywood movie star (professional pretender) thinks their opinion is greater than some one else's of non-celebrity after they have no personal experience in the topic they are discussing. that's how we get somebody's brother-in-law in charge of something that they are not qualified for.

what are the odds you build up a tolerance building a higher immunity than normal- not sure you are helping anyone here. I wouldn't call you an idiot but who is to say someone watching runs with this info on the 1st day. anyways for what it's worth for others info I'm guessing you are aware - Poisons are substances that cause harm to organisms when sufficient quantities are absorbed, inhaled or ingested. A toxin is a poisonous substance produced within living cells or organisms. This sign is used to indicate the presence of poisons.

You asked about good taste and being poison.
Well we have some thing here called lantainion. It makes really nice looking bluesh/purple Berry's. Cows and horses raised around it will not eat them.
Some that never saw it before will eat them and die.
I ask my uncle bacicaly the same? When I was a kid.
He said if someing small would eat them and die later. It would keep something else from eating the small plants after the animal decomposed and would fertilizer the plant really well.
Sound feasible?

I know this is from a couple years ago but I found some of these one time. I watched Harry Potter recently with the goofy mandrake part and thought back to finding these. I didn-t eat them because I was worried that being part of the nightshade family that the fruits would also have the deliriant/toxic alkaloids (hyoscyamine, atropine, scopolamine, etc. . Do the fruits not contain any of these? Very interesting thank you for doing things like this so we know!

It's really strange, because I always grew up thinking Mayapples weren't toxic when ripe, and never really heard anyone say otherwise. So the strange part is that so many people started saying they were toxic, period. Great video though, and goes to show, there are so many things, that I have even seen universities, say are toxic, and more reliable sources, say are not. Trifoliate Orange being one.

They look like what we call may pops or wild passion fruit. I have all ways been told they were good for you. I have been waiting to try some.
I have a big vine growing on one of my horse finces. There's about 35 of them on it. They are green some are just starting to get the gold/yellow tint to them.
They look the same. I wonder if its the same stuff?

Im really late, but now Im wondering how many things arent actually toxic and that maybe a long time ago people used to tell eachother that things were toxic so that they could eat it, or maybe someone was allergic and everyone assumed it was toxic. Just some curious ideas, but im not taking the risk of eating something that people say is toxic.

I have eaten may apple several times in my life even the ones that are not complety yellow. didnt get sick. I even bit into the outside of them like eating a real apple but the outter skin tastes like crap so i spit it out. But no sickness. The inside taste almost exactly like passion flower fruit and have almost as many seeds.
