I live in Oregon, on the Pacific. We have a few species of fish that we cannot retain, namely but not limited to, Yellow Eye rockfish. They suffer barotrauma as well, we use what is called a descender device to return them to a more normalized pressure gradient. I cannot in any way speak to your Ling, but the studies here show there's a good (not great) survival rate when a descender is used. Might be worth asking your local biologists about it if you don't wish to keep the Ling? Your local Bio's could possibly even contact Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife and/or US Fish and Wildlife for study information if needed.
Always amused you guys just call them -Ling- and are directly related to Cod, our version, we call Ling Cod, and have zero relation to Cod. LOL

Fishing off the Brittany coast when about the same age as your James. Mum snagged the bottom. The skipper said she had a conger and that I should be put in the fish barrel. Skipper was huge so was the bloomin fish. I watched from the roof of the boat. Once on board the conger was whacked about five times with a table leg filled with lead and still wouldn-t die. Couldn-t get it into the boot of the very small rental car so gave it to the fisherman for soup.

Do you know that it was recently scientifically discovered that if you touch mackeral in any way and throw them back into the sea. They endure a slow and painful death over about 3 days because their skin membrane is extremely delicate and gets ruptured when touched by a human hand.
I'm sure you know this John and just letting other people know out there to just never throw them back if you touch them.

Great vid as always, John. Regarding the tangling line, The fire service method for not having a line tangle is to put one end in a bag/sack and feed the rest in haphazardly. When you need the help rope either throw the bag so the line follows out. Or just pull the line from the bag. Sounds complicated but if you try it you'll find it works. -

Fishing is the calmest soothing thing until the bite. Then its just a lot happening at once. Been ages since I fished. Mostly lake and small river. Tried going out on the sea to fish a couple of times. Learned that I easily get sea sick and spent the time trying not to barf: P

I was worried that you were going to throw that beautiful Lingcod back in; you didn't. Lingcod is one of my favorite fish; I think it is better than Salmon when cooked properly ( using lots of butter!
Next time please show us the blue green flesh of the fish.

I don't understand why he throws back the exact catches he went out to get. If you want a big conga and you get one, why wouldn't you keep it? I have no problems with hunting for food, but why put an animal through this if you're not going to keep it?

Never be afraid to discuss things like the dispatching/bleeding side of things. It's an integral part of - & as good for people to learn about as baiting up. Especially from someone like you who will do it humanely and quickly.
