Sea fishing in Autumn and Winter can be very good providing you get good weather. Here I take the opportunity to try for a bonus fish. Luck was not with me for the BIG sharks but I did have some great inshore fishing on the smaller Sharks. Catsharks to be exact. Fishing on the reefs wasn't doing much so I fished with fresh caught mackerel at anchor and have some stunning fish. Just goes to show the importance of a plan B

I lived on the mississippi gulf coast and started to play with a couple of alligator gar and didn-t swap out my mono leader for one made of wire. Of course I didn-t want to swap it out and I wasn-t expecting to actually hook into one until my line tightened and then popped on it-s teeth. Moral of the story if you know something is weak change it for something stronger or more teeth resistant in that case. Swapped the leader and threw out a mullet head and hooked into one of them again and managed to get it in. Fun times were had when I lived down there. Red and black drum and gator gar were my favorites to fight because of their power. You-d start getting them turned around and then they-d just be like nope and start taking all the line you just go back again. I have a couple rod and reel combos that are my oh hey that-s a gar setups. Heavy braid and a wire trace and live bait hook.

I have been curious. Does your family, and self, have a hierarchy of preferred eating fish (from favourites to 'won't even think about it'. My grandad was a bugger for getting various food down you even if it meant lying his soul away. After hearing me announce there was no way I'd eat squirrel, on our next camp he served up 'tree rabbit'. I was about 6 or seven then. I was about 11 or 12 before I realised that tree-rabbit was bloody squirrel. Pigeon was 'little chicken: D Tasted fine mind you. Durham in the 'dark-ages' eh! Salmon, Trout, Smoked Pike, well that was the local landowners, until it was eaten.

Your mackerel fishing reminds me of the time I went sea fishing with some friends in Tramore in Ireland. One friend took a novice priest who was opposite me in the boat. We all court lots of mackerel but the novice got nothing. I even gave him my rod not that there was anything different on my rod and he still court nothing. The man about must have being testing him. He was not too bothered anyway. Just out enjoying the day. Not sure If I have not already mentioned this story. Knowing me I have.

That was an cracking session mate, I was busy and finding out the convert from lb to kg on that huss. 12. 6lb (5. 7kg) not bad catch at all - Hope I some day are able to catch one shark of my own. Dont thing there are a good stock of them in our waters. But I can try and target some wolf fish here - and they grow big and have a nasty bite if you are unlucky and he gets your finger or tow. Stay safe mate and have a good one -

Another great video from the 'bowat' John! Those Mackerel were huge and would have been heading for my Cast Iron pan! Great catches on the Bull Huss too - I was chuckling at the big one climbing out of the bucket behind you! You're going to need a bigger bucket! Looked like a good day out in some splendid sunshine & fairly calm water for this time of year. Stay safe & well mate! --

Your %100 correct. Allways be soaking bait when your fishing. To much time is waisted preparing rigs when you should have presentations in the water. I started running mono leaders off braid like you do on occasion. I find mono takes a harder solid clinch knot. Braid casts better. and dosen't hold memory. no birds nests off your spinning real spools! Great video brother.

I love how you make a call on everything and are always right! Your an educated man mate. I get the impression you spent many hour in the boat with your old man, who probably spent many with his. Generations of knowledge right there, one thing is for sure you will never go hungry. -Catch a man a fish and feed him for a day, teach a man to fish and feed him for life-

Just started fishing again and a never realised how many shark species are in our waters, its fantastic. One thing i struggle with tho is knowing what to buy for rigs, the tiny beads and bits & bobs i still dont know the names for them are. Cracking video again been binge watching them and it just gives me the motivation to get out there even in bad weather--

Here's a possible tip I've just found out. Bait elastic holders. I've made one out of - of all things, a (clean) pee sample bottle. got a hot needle and melted a hold from the inside out, through the point, then trimmed off the 'skirt' around the point. If I lose it over the side, it floats for longer enough so I can recover it. :)

John, caught 4 or 5 bull huss in Wales in summer. One of them puked up what seemed like an adult portion very greasy chilli con carne all over the deck. Do you know if that's a natural occurrence or has someone tossed their dinner over the side? Luckily I had some fairy liquid with me or I'd have had to go back to the marina.
