Fishing from the saltwater dock at our holiday property in the Florida Keys we catch multiple tropical species and even have a surprise encounter with wild Manatee. Some incredible underwater footage and learn with us as we fish with limited simple tackle in a place we have never been before. gerhar11: I do miss fishing in florida, spent 3 years on the Gulf of Mexico. Couple of things John. Be very wary of size limits as they are strictly imposed. I think mackerel might have to be around 14 inches before you can use them as live bait. Moharra or Pinfish no problem. Did a lot of fishing for the mangrove snapper, throwing under the dock with a live shrimp, man a 3 lb snapper will fight, and very good eating. Have a great time. Hey my friend!
Your in my state now!
You should have gotten some Mud Minnows and made a simple 12 inch light 20lb leader with a small Kahle hook. Attached with a small barrel swivel and about an ounce lead.
Attach the Mud Minnow. Cast up or down the canal about 20 feet and slowly retrieve your line. Make sure you feel the bottom.
If you get Two quick jerks. stop reeling.
Count to 5. Gently live your rod. If you feel like you are hung on bottom it's a Flounder.
Lower your rod. Count to 10. Set the hook and reel in your flounder.
I catch around 1000 of them a year here off Daytona Beach.
We just had some charters this past week for them as the spring Flounder are moving in to the rivers and are thick just off the beach.
Good luck and enjoy your vacation.

I've lived in south Florida all my life and it's great to finally see you enjoying all the great things that live here! Even with the great abundance of fish, they fight hard and are fun to catch even on a nice day in the canals. I am glad you also got to see some manatees which are quite the sight; oddly majestic and intimidating in their own way. Generally, barracudas are a bit of a nuisance as they scare away all the fish and chop them in half on the way up and the way down. I've even seen barracudas biting other barracudas in half! And yes, pretty much all our fish are sharp in any way possible, with spines and sharp bits on all their fins, gill plates, and tails. Anyway, its lovely to see that you got enjoy a wonderful time fishing in the Florida Keys!

Quick question John, For someone with loads of experience, Someone who-s only targeting fish like mackerel, cod and pollock etc shore fishing, what-s the best type of line to load your reel with? I-ve currently got a 17lb braid on but it feels far too light and I-m scared to give it a proper cast incase the line snaps and I loose my things, The wind catches the line too much also due to it being so light.

Been away for 10 days in the north of Norway visiting family John and have seen the 'still's of this shoot. So pleased to have now had the opportunity to watch the video. How wonderfully diverse the species are in that short stretch of water! Lovely to see Hannah again and to hear James enjoying himself too. My thanks once more to all of you for another crackin' video. My Best Wishes to all of you.

Don't know what size limit is now but we used to eat 'cudas that size.
You should see those mangrove snapper in their dark stage coloring! Gotta love those old sea cows. I have petted one at Fort DeSoto. I was wade fishing at the time and one swam by me close enough to reach, great experience.

Hi John, ive had the pleasure of fishing in Florida many times, sometimes from docks like the one you are fishing from, if you use small bits of squid for the baitfish you will use much less bait, they pull the shrimps off too quickly. If you need any info give me a shout
Ian.

Next time try some live shrimp on a 3 ft 30 lb leader with just a 2/0 hook and maybe a cpl small split shots. Throw up near the mangroves and should catch snook some nice mangrove snappers small barracudas and maybe a redfish or ladyfish etc- Good luck mate! --
