Bluegills themselves; not pike, are usually the largest limiting factor to their average size. Stunting due to overpopulation is the most common problem. Overharvest of large panfish is possible, but uncommon in all but the smallest waters. If you're body of water only produces small bluegills, there is a simple method of determining why.
Take a look at the bluegills you catch. If they appear thin and overly streamlined for their length, they are probably starving and overpopulated. Overly fat, but short, bluegills may benefit from tighter harvest restrictions. A good population of predatory fish - including pike - limits bluegill numbers and usually leads to a larger average size.

Great video! Really enjoyed this episode, I live just half an hour west of rice lake. Would you guys consider doing a small stream Brook trout episode in this area? There is a retro episode featuring small stream brookies but it would be nice to see an updated version. Love the show!

I had been to Sunshine Cove years ago, at that time, it was noted for the walleye. Are they still in the lake? My best to Susan and Randy, they do a great job with the resort.

U can catch me on any small fly. Copper jons to elk hair caddie are great fun. They are real aggressive jumpers!
