It is about time that they implement size limit laws to protect jumbo perch (females) and decrease the allowed catch size and also the daily limit. If we do that for nearly all other species why not perch? The biggest plump fish are always big females and we should throw them back and only keep the long skinny ones that are the males. The female are big because of their eggs, this is it. There is not less meat in males and releasing the big females and having a daily limit of 10 would really help the populations. How many places have been overfished and now only have puny little perch left? When I was a kid living in Montreal, we used to ice fish on the St-Lawrence river and we caught hundreds each time we went. I remember once we caught 453 perch, all big perch, jumbo perch, and since perch were not considered a -real- sport fish, we gave them all to a guy who used them for bait for bear hunting! Doing something like that today would be nearly criminal, insane, and irresponsible. And years of abuse like that, combined with the popularity of perch fishing and eating and unlimited daily limits, have decreased greatly the size of the fish and the number of the fish. In Saskatchewan where I live now, we used to have no limits and then it went down to 25/day and some overfished lakes closer to cities have reduced the limits to 10 per day. After a few years of lowered daily limits, we can really see the difference, we catch tons of big perch and I just keep the flat ones, the males, even if it is not mandatory, because I find it more logical and ethical, and I know that by doing so I increase my chances of catching lots of fish for years to come. And 10 fish a day is more than enough and it is better to catch 10 nice one easily than fishing for hours and catch nothing else than puny perch like it is the case most of the time in front of Montreal because of daily limits that have been way too high for too many years. And we have to remember that perch are eaten by a number of predators that we like to catch and when perch populations are healthy, bigger predator fish populations are healthy too!

Sight fishing tip tip: Drop some broken egg shells down the hole. Fish show up a lot better against a white bottom. NO, it's not pollution. Egg shells are just natural calcium.

Did you know every time you buy a fishing license you are begging for permission to catch a fish from people who are hired to protect your RIGHT TO FISH!
