The Struggles of Pre Spawn Bass Fishing

Bass fishing in the early spring or late winter can be some of the most challenging days for catching numbers of fish. During these few weeks, the largemouth bass will start to move in and out of shallow water to begin staging to spawn. In this series of videos with lunkerstv we have discovered during this challenge that the best way to catch the bass in shallow water is to use weightless senkos and fish them slowly in 1-5 feet of water. Another technique that is good is the caronlina rig. Using a carolina rig with a small soft plastic worm and dragging on the bottom around points where bass like to stage is usually a good way to hook into a big bass. We only had one big bass bite today and it got off. Water temperature is crucial this time of year. Largemouth bass love to move into shallow water and start spawning around 62 degrees. You will see in this video that the fishing was really tough in the morning after a cold front came in and then it picked up in the afternoon with the sun comes out and starts to warm the water. The male largemouth bass are the first fish to start moving up and then the big female bass will follow in the later days and weeks. After feeding heavily before the spawn, big largemouth bass will just hang out in the water around stumps, grass and anything they feel comfortable around until the water temperature and moon phase is right for them to move onto the bank. These days and weeks are the worst days to be bass fishing because the bass don't want to eat, the just want to hang out until the it's time to spawn. LUNKERS CHANNEL

Now in Maine the water has just about hit 60 degrees in my area. It seems like the males are in anywhere from 2-5 feet of water. I actually caught my new pb which was a 6lb female in 3 feet of water which doesn't really make sense considering its the only big female I have caught in that depth. Its confusing because there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to what they are doing as both males and females are in 2-8 feet of water that has a weedy bottom and there has been very very few fish around areas with a rocky gravel bottom. Its obvious they arent making beds or spawning yet. I haven't caught a single bass deeper than 8 feet as I have been trying to pattern off that one big one I caught. Could that have been a lucky catch and most are deeper off the rocky areas?

Dude you guys did better than I did. No lie, my Fit Bit says I walked 25000 steps, which I did along the bank while fishing. I got three bites and lost them, even though they were small like what you were catching. and the rest of the day was absolutely nothing for me. horrid. but I still enjoyed the outdoors time and the hiking was phenomenal. All in all, I should have gone Crappie fishing because they were catching them on minnows. geez. and I had left all my live worms at home. LOL

Loving the voice over videos! Can you do a video of buying a used bass boat? I would love to know what to look for and what to avoid! I am currently useing a 16ft Jon boat with a 15hp. I usually fish in amistad lake in Del rio tx. The wind is a pain to fight! I'm wondering if a fiberglass is better or save some money and get a bass tracker!

Great vid and good info. I fished Rayburn about 3 weeks ago and all my bites over 20 plus came on the c-rig but same issue and I couldn't get the big ones to bite just lots of spots and decent little bass

Really love the commentary of you explaining how everything is working in a recap instead of trying to do it quickly on the water off the top of your head!
