I took a pile of old trash wood from an old barn on a farm and built a rustic outdoor table. Now this treasure of a wood table sits in my studio where I make outdoor videos. So proud of this build!

Is there no alternative to swapping out the legs with something that isn't toxic? I wouldn't risk it, as beautiful as the legs turned out, i'm sure you can achieve the same look with a non-toxic version of the legs; )
is there any other wood at the barn you salvaged from that you could still use for legs that aren't the ones covered in creosote, if the historical value is so important to you? just some thoughts. The table does look awesome, just not awesome enough to put you and your family at risk IMO.

I agree with Rick W. There is nothing on the planet that you can put on that table that will probably stick to it in the first place. But you can try. I'm pretty sure water-based products will ultimately start to peel. Epoxy might but I wouldn't waste my time with it. I wouldn't want that even in my garage. But it does look good. Just buy different materials and rebuild it. You'll be glad you did. Sorry.

Dude you are being ridiculous about keeping the legs on that table. You seem to be asking for advice in the comments section about what to do. There are many many people including Stewart Wearing who know what they are talking about with that chemical. Get rid of them for the sake of your child and wife.

I think it's pretty simple people.
The table turned out great!
He put the clear coat on it.
If it starts to stink again he can put more on or dump it.
You guys are making it sound like its freaking radio active or something! sheesh.

Your table is beautiful! And with all that you did for it and all of the work and toxicity what if someone offered you 10, 000 for it, would you sell it? Or does it have too much sentimentality?

If you ever think about doing it on top, get the bar top epoxy. It comes in a gallon jug and is the epoxy resin used on, you guessed it, bar tops and counters and whatnot.
