What Did I Hook? (Mullet Run 2016)

This is the last video I have from the mullet run. I hooked something I almost couldn't stop on the snag rod. I'm guessing I either snagged a mullet and something ate it, like a blacktip or giant jack crevalle. After the action died down we moved to another beach, and I quickly jumped off a tarpon then caught and released a blacktip shark.

Years ago while surf fishing off Delray beach, fishing for tarpon, hooked a tarpon, fought it to just about shore, huge strike, lots of red water. Huge hammer ate the tarpon, somehow got hooked, stayed hooked. Not fun, walked the dog down the beach for more than 6 hours, no cell phones, worried parents, loved ones, ect. All of our gear was still at our normal fishing area except us. We fought and walked from 8th ave to Atlantic ave. very nice walk. Got the Hammer to the sandbar many hours later just as Delray PD found us. We figured we couldn't get the fish any further, no way up the beach, so we broke it off. It swam off after about 3 minutes or so. Easy 500 plus on an old school Penn jig master and surf Rod. on the flip side I know of several people who hooked Marlin off the beach on live bait as well as sailfish, you just never know what you can hook.

Viktor -- Just curious which beach you were on when you hooked the mystery fish. You said it frayed you off on a nearshore reef, and the only place I know that has a real nearshore reef is Lauderdale-by-the-Sea. All the beach renourishment programs the last 20 years have buried all the nearshore reefs except the one by Anglin's Pier.

Since there were no head shakes, it might have been a huge ray. Here in Singapore, the rays can grow up to 90 pounds and it fights hard, almost like you hooked a submarine. I had a ray spool my entire reel and cut me off. I couldn't even reel it in once.

what do you put behind your braid on a regular spool? I had been running mono backing but since braid is cheaper these days I just put a couple wraps of electrical tape, whilst o the subject what knot/technique do you tie onto your spool?

Based on your location and violent periodic head shakes, it was likely a shark. You shouldn't post places where you go. There will be 1000 guys there next time. A few miles north it gets even better. Nonetheless nice video.

Wow well I guess you will never know the fish that spooled you but it was fun to try to get it turned and brought in. Great work on this one.

What pound braid do you generally run when fishing the mullet schools? How do you free line the mullet back out? Thanks, keep making great vids.

If no headshakes then probably a Ray. I've been spooked by one before lol it literally felt like a wall that kept moving away haha
