HW News - NVIDIA Considering 7nm RTX GPUs, RAM Price Down-Trend, ASUS Gundam PC Parts

Hardware news is slammed this week: NVIDIA is rumored to be considering 7nm TSMC GPUs to help ease supply needs, RAM prices face another down trend, and a new Earth Simulator is made. Clearly, after all those Cute Pet component reviews, we're excited to hear that more mainstream manufacturers are considering non-standard GPU, case, and peripheral designs to keep things interesting. ASUS is newest on that list, coupling Gundam marketing with its parts. In other news, the Arctic Liquid Freezer II is getting in-place updates to improve its mounting mechanism and the Arctic Freezer 50 has launched. For memory, RAM prices are still on-track for a price dip due to over-supply. Plenty more discussed in the news, all timestamped below and in the video.

I installed an Arctic Liquid Freezer 2 with zero issues. I came up with the method after my first build earlier this year, when I installed an aftermarket cooler on a MOBO after it was in the case and realized I was losing the back plate.
It is very simple. As you remove things, re-add the screws. If you need to manipulate the back plate always have at least two screws, ideally on opposite corners, already attached to the back plate so you can pull it up to screw things in. So when the back plate is too far down, just pull up on a nearby screw to lift it up and boom you can screw it in super easily.
If I am being honest, I did have an issue installing my Arctic Liquid Freezer 2. The damn cables are so tough that they were fighting me. In the end I had to have the motherboard on the anti-static cover on the floor with the waterblock resting overhead on a coffee table. That alleviated the tension enough for me to not be fighting the the cables.

Can we just take a moment to mourn the loss of Sata, It hasn't changed in over 10 years.
I've got (ITX) a single M.2 NVME boot drive and 3x sata SSD's (MX500's) that are no faster now than M500's were 7+ years ago.
Is 1GB/s through sata too much to ask for? It's still on 8b/10b encoding while everyone else has moved onto 128b/130b.
You can't fit 4 M.2 SSD's on an itx board and who wants to get a full tower case thats 3x larger for a full ATX board just to add 1-2 more SSD's the size of a stick of gum? Because that seems insane. Or are we now replacing the second graphics card with a QUAD M.2 adaptor in which case we'll need more pcie lanes on future cpu's.

When you say that running the XOC EVGA bios might be abusive for daily/long term use when overclocking due to the extra 50 watt power limit, what do you mean by that? Because it would be inefficient, or because it could cause long term damage to the card? I have a 3090 FTW3 Ultra and Jacob has mentioned that they re currently testing an XOC bios for it for possible release over the next couple weeks. Are you suggesting that running such an overclock could damage my card over time, or that it would simply use power inefficiently?

It s tough for NVIDIA because they are stuck in a queue behind Apple, Qualcomm and it seems AMD as well. I think Apple and Qualcomm have already saturated 5nm but if NVIDIA can get onto 7nm+ it puts them in the queue for 5nm behind AMD when Apple and Qualcomm make the move to 3nm in 2022 or if 5nm production increases (supposedly yield not really an issue, extreme UV has been extremely successful thus far). Of course assuming Samsung doesn t manage to land contracts. AMD is already on this trajectory to get 5nm for Zen 4.

The mounting problems with arctic coolers are not limited to the liquid cooler solutions, I bought an arctic freezer 34 esports for my Ryzen 3600X, and had to use tape on the back bracket to keep it in place so I could install it properly. I love how it works once mounted, pretty good temps and not very noisy, but installing it was a pain in the ass.

I really don't understand how they could get into this undersupply situation, I mean this is a big oversight. Why didn't they just make more cards off the bat? I mean it's not like anyone's going anywhere... if they didn't manage to sell them all in the beginning, they could've just held on to them selling them gradually...

I really hope Intel split off from their foundry business. That way we have more players in the market, plus Intel no longer holds the lead on lithography. 7nm is pretty much everywhere at this point and Intel's gutted 10nm is a stepping stone at this point.

It's sad that Asus just makes a Gundam motherboard for Intel CPUs. That EK monoblock looks so gorgeous and I'd pay good money to see it on a x570 motherboard. Silver themed high end motherboards are too rare and I can't get an Asrock x570 aqua anymore :(

The Arctic AM4 mounting update is good news, although I was kinda hoping they'd move to plain black sleeved tubing. The liquid freezer 2 isn't the prettiest solution out there, I'm fine with the lack of RGB, I just wish the tubes were just plain black.

Tsubasa has the same pronunciation as tsunami (Japanese TS pronounced as hard C), not like Subasa.
Steve always strives for perfection like the CDProjekt Red pronunciation and the Chinese words so I write this comment as constructive criticism.
