Pressure Problems: Arctic Freezer 50 CPU Cooler Review & Benchmarks

The Arctic Freezer 50 (non-TR version) really needs some work. Arctic has a strong liquid cooling CPU cooler lineup, but this air cooler has pressure and assembly weaknesses. Our review of the Arctic Freezer 50 specifically benchmarks the AM4/Intel version, but be advised that there is also a Threadripper (Freezer 50 TR) version out there. We have not tested the Threadripper one and so can't speak to its quality at this time -- but we can talk about the Freezer 50 as it pertains to its desktop CPU (non-HEDT) cooling capabilities. The Freezer 50 competes most directly vs. the Scythe FUMA 2 (which we reviewed), and at the higher-end, more expensive competition includes the Noctua NH-D15, Deepcool Assassin III, and similar. We're still working towards uncovering the best CPU coolers for our eventual 2021 round-up, but for now, the list is shaping-up pretty well. Gregg: I purchased their first iteration of liquid freezer 360 which lasted exactly 3 years. Although disappointed I decided to give them a second chance with liquid freezer II due to a very thorough and positive review from Steve. Really happy so far and delightful to see that arctic prolonged the warranty .

It never ceases to amaze me how badly companies manage to mess up something as simple as an air cooler. There's a few % difference between the big ones, and some minor variations in RAM clearance. There are some decent budget options. There are some minimal profile ones. And then there's tons of utter garbage. How? Who greenlights this crap? You'll notice that nearly all of the top coolers in the categories I listed conform to one of a handful of designs, especially the big ones like the D15/assassin which are all effectively clones of one another. There's a reason for that. This isn't new tech. There's not much room for innovation beyond tighter manufacturing tolerances on contact plates, more thermally conductive materials, and maybe some niche products for small form factor builds. There's no cause to try to reinvent the wheel.

It seems artic has an engineering problem. I have their 280mm AIO and it's awesome. So I picked up a cheap tower cooler of theirs for a side build on a low power pc, similar mounting system, but the damn thing can't clear the VRM heatsinks. I had to take off one of the vrm heatsinks to make the cooler fit on a z170 board.
They produce some really awesome stuff, but than they produce products with clearance issues and do so intentionally, I don't get it.

It would be cool to see manufacturers here in the comments section. Arctic has an amazing lineup of AIO liquid coolers, but this air cooler needs some improvements which shouldn't be that difficult to make to future production batches. Would be fun to know if Arctic has acknowledged the issues with their product and tell whether they can or will do something about it.

The people who want to buy a blinged out RGB cooler aren't the same people buying standard height DIMMs. The design choice is puzzling to me. I'd say I'm historically positive on Arctic's products and they make some of the best bang for buck case fans around - but I guess everyone fumbles now and then. Hope their next offering is a bit more sensible.

Where was this video 2 months ago. Im gonna get a new Cooler anyway but I just have to say, it lasted a few months completely fine, what is really concerning, is their customer support, its horrible. Had to wait 3 weeks to get a part for it that should have been shipped with it.

-Let's make a new cpu cooler! What's important in a cpu cooler nowadays?
-I heard kids like RGB!!!!!!
-Ok, put a ton of rgb on it, make it LOOK cool and release it.
This is just a very very very bad manufacturing company!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Literal garbage!!!!!

They really need to adopt standard fans on all of their air coolers - warranty and supply are great and all, but these are still incompatible with the parts many of us have on hand and other companies like Noctua and Scythe get by fine with normal fans

My fridge freezer works great at keeping my chips/fries cool. Can we please skip the drip feeding the market for decades and just have PC's with water cooled everything and just get on with the tasks at hand. Thanks :D

The most disappointing thing about this for me is that it has RGB.
Just like Noctua, I have a lot of respect for Artic for making great products without RGB. And Artic may even pass on some of the savings as well.
