AMD chipset differences: B550 specs explained vs. X570, B450, & ZEN 3 support (2020)

AMD's B550 chipset has a release date set for June 16. We're comparing AMD's chipsets and talking about differences between X570, B550, B450, X370, and A320, plus Zen 3 support. AMD's chipset naming convention hasn't changed much over the years, but the company hasn't really produced a single public source of validated, detailed information on the AMD B550 chipset specs, particularly as it compares vs. X570. We'll be covering I/O differences with hard numbers for X570 vs. B550, X470, B450, and A320M. Using AMD's latest information release to press, we can also talk about planned support for future AMD Zen 3 CPUs on the 500-series, as currently X470 and B450 aren't advertised as supporting Zen 3, and we can also look at backwards compatibility for the new AMD chipsets. The differences in the chipsets primarily boil-down to PCIe generational differences, so that'd be Gen4 support for both the CPU and chipset lanes, Gen3 general purpose lanes, and Gen2 general purpose lanes on the older platforms. So, AMD says they look at the comments and listen to their customers? Well listen to this, it's total bs that AMD is saying nothing under B550 will work with next gen Ryzen. Maybe it wouldn't be as egregious if B550 came out a year sooner, but instead you have all of us people who bought new 3000 chips with older B-class motherboards because we didn't need X-class boards. If the new B-class was out sooner, we would have bought it over the older B450, but it wasn't. So now that AMD screwed around and didn't get out B550 out in time, all of us who didn't need a premium motherboard are screwed when it comes to future upgrades. Thanks AMD. I understand that there is only so much room on a bios, but maybe you should have thought of that sooner and instructed manufacturers to keep that in mind when designing a board. And if it's too late now to add support for 4000 series on older motherboards, then you should have optional bios codes available that does away with support for older cpus and can support only 4000, or maybe 3000 and 4000 if they'll both fit. But seriously, AMD, it doesn't mean that much to stick with the same socket for 5 years if a ton of boards have no upgrade path now, even though the cpu will still physically fit in the socket. We all bought B450 because YOU said there would be backwards compatibility through this year. Now you're reneging? You screwed up by not getting B550 out sooner, now you need to make it right to all of us who were STUCK buying an older chipset .

I hope AMD gets pushed back on their decision not to (even unofficially) support the 300 and 400 series Motherboards for Ryzen 4000 CPU's like they did with the 3000 series. Many 300 and 400 series boards were built with cheap components, since motherboard vendors have never really taken AMD boards seriously until X570. There were however really good boards too, like the Crosshair series for example (I own a X370 Crosshair VI Extreme) which are massively overkill for pretty much any Ryzen CPU. Its been shown that PCI-E 4.0 used to work fine on the better boards, but because AMD didn't want confusion about which boards can handle it and which can't, they Removed that functionality in the AGESA code. (Wish someone could create a modded BIOS with it re-enabled) I'm guessing AMD is once again trying to weed out those weaker 300 and 400 series boards while sacrificing everyone who bought good ones. I don't buy the excuse i've heared about the BIOS ROM size not being large enough, as thats why the MSI Max series of boards were made (32mb), and the Current largest BIOS size for my ASUS board is about 10mb. I always build my computers to last a good 8 years, and resell parts if possible, so as not to add to the mountains of E-waste. I refuse to upgrade my perfectly servicable high end motherboard and feed into useless consumerism.

Allow me to rephrase that title AMD being a d!ck explained The motherboards have limited ROM capacity is just total BS from AMD. 1- even some of the Expensive X570 boards have 16MB ROM and these boards will support 4th gen, meanwhile B450 Tomahawk Max from MSI has 32MB and will not support 4th gen. 2- most of us bought B450 boards under the impression it will support 4th gen based on their missleading claims. 3- if im not mistaken AMD claimed to support AM4 boards until and during 2020 in one of their older slides. 4- you can simply drop 1st gen support form boards that are going to upgrade to 4th gen. 5- most of techtubers and other reviewrs recommended X570 boards ONLY if you care about PCI-E 4.. never have AMD, board partners nor reviewers stated that 4xx boards will be obsolete in the very near future. 6- B550 was delayed almost a whole year... meaning that me and many others who were trying to guarantee future compatibility for upcoming CPUs were forced to either buy over-heating / over-priced X570 boards or just buy any decent 4xx board. Its obviously easier to blame us consumers for having boards with small ROM chips instead of making board partners take the fall for their delays... Guess its our fault now B550 was delayed

Wow, so many salty folks about B450 boards and Zen 3. My questions are this. Is Zen 3 available? Do you know 100% that your particular B450 board does not support it? Oh, you mean you don't have a time machine or can't see into the future to be certain this is the case. Even though AMD may not officially support Zen 3 on B450 boards based on information in marketing materials that doesn't mean that MB makers or bios modders won't add that support once Zen 3 is actually released. Getting all hot and bothered about the potential that a future CPU won't work in the board you have today seems a little silly IMO. When Zen 3 is out and when you can confirm with 100% certainty that your board doesn't support it THEN you have a valid reason to complain.

I purchased a X370 MB back when it was 'cheap' : Gigabyte GA-AX370M-DS3H (rev. 1.x) which was selling as low as 20 pounds - with rebates - in the UK! I got it as an 'upgradable, budget' platform along with a r5 2400G. In theory the VRMs can handle up to a 3900x. If a 4000 series APU is based on Zen 2 architecture, does this mean the X370 MB could potentially support say a 4000 series 8 core APU? Further to this, is the compatibility an issue with CPU PCIe4 connectivity or space on the bios? If it is the latter couldn't support for older chipsets be dropped to create more space for a new bios?
reply

Oh no!! It doesn't support the new, new!! Your computer no longer works. I highly doubt that people on here bought the best CPU of whatever gen you have. I have a r5 2600 and it is playing every game just fine. If I upgrade I will just buy an r7. Dont get why everyone is so butthurt. Better than every new CPU causing you to buy a new mobo like Intel. I'm sure they will create a bios for older chipsets, if not buy the best cpu in that series. Problem solved.

So, numbers are confusing when you watch this video with only one coffee in the system, so let me just ask this: With a X570 board, can i run my GPU, a RX5700XT, two NVMe drives and three Sata drives all at full bandwith? Was planning on getting the Tomahawk Wifi when it releases, maybe with a 3700X in June or July, since Covid19 crapped all over my vacation plans, i have more money to spend lol I cant do the same with the B550, right? confused screaming

I also posted this on Paul's Hardware video on the new B550 motherboards : The Gigabyte B550 Aorus Master doesn't support SLI ONLY dual Radeon ! The second as well as the third PCIex 16x slots have ONLY 4x electrical connection !!!!!! So keep that in mind if you want SLI ( insert derp face here :) ) , or (more importantly) if you need a second 8x slot for fast storage (for those who want to add more storage via M.2 to PCIex 16x adapters).

My plans of running a 4700X on my X470 are dashed. The luster is off AMD's star, and they are revealed to be no less shitty than Intel. I knew they were equal in this capacity, I have both red and blue platforms. But now seeing this much shorter than expected range of compatibility with the pretty X470 (in white), I will have to know I can only put the second to best CPU series into my little budget treasure. The thrill is gone. :(
