500 Motherboard Analysis: ASUS Maximus XII Formula Z490 PCB, Water Blocks, VRM, & More

In this video, we'll be talking about whether water cooling is worth it for motherboard VRMs, specifically on the Maximus XII Formula, and we'll also cover VRM efficiency of the board as matched against various heat loads (e.g. Intel i9-10900K CPUs with differing degrees of overclocks applied). The ASUS Maximus XII Formula is among the more expensive Z490 boards and didn't make it on our list of Best Z490 Boards that we published earlier, but that's mostly because a lot of its price is built into the water cooling cost, and so it's less pure of a board than some of the others.

Overclocking in current times is a weird thing. As I understand it, in the past, you were able to achieve very high increases in clock speeds using normal hardware in certain CPUs, but it was a way to pay less for a higher level of performance.
But now, it seems to be the very thing for which you are paying extra. Rather ironic. It is almost purely an enthusiast's activity now, rather than providing objectively better value.

A maximus Formula is casual level? I guess that makes my Asus Strix motherboard peasent level. I remember a time back in the days of Core 2 Duo when 150 bucks was considered a lot for a motherboard and my motherboard had almost a kilo of copper heatsinks on it with heat pipes and it cost under 200 bucks most people spent less than 100 and now when spending 250 it is not even mid tier it is more like entry level.

I mean for me it's an option, it's only 500 where normally they are like 700, also I want to use cpu only waterblocks since those give a lot better performance over a monoblock. I might get it. Sad that it doesn't have IGPU power cuz that's useful for when a gpu dies but idk.

really keen on a review of the gigabyte z490 vision D as its the choice of hackintosh builders currently.. basically i wanna know if it can handle a overclock of a 10900k.. i would like to hit something over 5ghz but im afraid the VRM wont be up to the task.

500 casual motherboard. There are probably a lot of whales that buy these ROG boards for this to exist. The only boards in the ROG (non Strix) line-up that make sense are the Hero and the Apex. The first is the high-end, the second is the XOC board.

Want to say if anyone has this motherboard like me there is a bug on this board if you insert an M.2 into M.2 Port 2 it will actually hold post code 00 for 20 seconds or more and then finally goes in hopefully ASUS will fix this.

I really hope Buildzoid is well compensated as a consultant because there is really no one else doing these kinds of in-depth analysis from the ee level, keeping the manufacturers honest and consumers informed. BZ ftw!

I use my maximus 12 formula vrm waterblock in a freezer to reduce stress on my freezer compressor. I run a water aquarium chiller. To cool my 10900k. Sadly im still not able to hit 5.5 ghz yet.

While watching this I try to focus on the beautiful drawing to keep myself from crying inside knowing that I have a long long way to go before actually buying a new pc :'(

To be frank...no IGP support is a major issue. I hope/trust it is properly highlighted on the Marketing/Box? I see many people complaining about this...
