Best B550 Motherboards for AMD Ryzen CPUs: MSI, Gigabyte, ASRock, & ASUS

Rating: 4.5; Vote: 2
We previously covered the best AM4 motherboards for Ryzen CPUs, comparing X570 vs. X470 and B450, but with the launch of B550, we wanted to make a dedicated video for just the top B550 motherboards to watch in 2020. This mostly considers the AMD Ryzen 3000 series (R5 3600, 3600XT, 3700X, 3800XT, 3900XT, 3950X), so we talk about VRM heat capabilities and efficiency, I/O options, PCIe configuration arrangements, troubleshooting features, and other differentiating factors between motherboards.

Every time this person reviews motherboards, he/she/they kind of just complain about most of them. If this person knows all about motherboards, and what makes them the best, why aren't manufacturers taking much of the advice from these reviews? This person also just basically makes the same statement in every review. Such as, This motherboard doesn't have Y , but it really doesn't matter, because it doesn't need it unless you are going to do X. and if you are going to do X you are not going to get this board anyway , or mentions how he doesn't understand why a certain manufacturer designs things a certain way, but then basically say it doesn't matter anyway. I just don't really find the reviews very useful. Again, if this person is such a know-it-all about this stuff, why wouldn't all of the manufacturers just make motherboards with this advice in mind, if that's the best way to do things?

24:00 A lot of the other [B550 itx boards] cost as much as X570 boards, and at that point it's like 'but why wouldn't you just buy the X570 ones instead?'
Front panel USB-C connector, for one. Literally the only X570 board with one is the Crosshair VIII impact which is over 400 bucks and not even itx. For another, the fact that they definitely do not cost the same as B550 boards in a lot of the world, here in Germany the X570i boards are between 25-100 more expensive than the B550i (the ASUS ROG Strix boards, for example, are 235 for B550 and 320 for X570, and the MSI boards are 200 for the B550 and 250 for the X570).

I bought an 3700X cheaply and I'm having difficulty to choose an motherboard to it. I want to use Asrock (though it's not an Iron Rule!). I ordered B550 Taichi, when it was sold at an exceptionally low price (a little over 200 ). Still waiting after a month, don't know if I will ever get it.
Thinking about getting x570 Taichi, but it's like 350 ... Cheaper Asrock would be Steel Legend (X570), but the temps of VRM on that make me think...
Then there's the new MSI Tomahawk (was it?), which seems to be good in its price point...
Difficult, difficult...

Finally, it's here! I'm not even surprised that the B550 Tomahawk would not be here. It's really disappointing feature-wise. It's really hard to justify it, there's always a better option at around the same price point. Even the great thermals don't save it since the Aorus Pro runs at nearly the same temps, possibly within the margin of error while also having better features.
Got a lot of flak from MSI fanboys when I said that the Tomahawk is bad compared to other brands in Reddit :D

And not sure where you're getting that 4000 max with memory on the Gigabyte from. It's 6560 MB/s . Come on, you slippin. Do it yourself next time instead of getting someone who shows not to be on point reviewing motherboards. Good thing I bought it with no outside influence because if I listened to you? I may have passed it up when I bought it on July 2nd. Then again, that was 10 days before this video released. Being off by so much is making me question whether or not to seek your reviews.

I myself have a MSI B450 Gaming Pro AC
I literally hate this board...
Here is why:
- small bios chip
- BIOS lacks features
- BIOS has mouse lag AF
- BIOS sometimes opens bugged where it feels like you have 1 fps and it's not useble at all
- BIOS HW Monitor literally doesn't work normally. I had to restart 3 times to apply my CPU fancurve
- boot and post takes forever
- wifi is really good or really bad. Quality changes a lot

Mobos are crazy expensive Right now in india. And the pricing is weird too.. broken logistics perhaps? B550 tomahawk is cheaper than b450 tomahawk! For a 800 budget build with rtx 2060, what would be a good cpu (either 3300x or 3600) +Mobo (prefer b550 but so expensive!) pairing? I'm looking for good vrm & I'll get a phanteks 400a for good airflow. First time builder, so don't know much about debugging via mobos.
And thanks for the video, very detailed!

Buildzoid : Please comment on Chipset transition in terms of Price vs Feature Points which u think i.e when we should consider B450 to B550 or move to x570: for eg In India Gigabyte B550m UD Comes at Rs 8.8k= 116 same price of B450 Steel Legend ; ASUS PRIME B550M comes at Rs 11.5k 151 same as B450 Tomahawk; Same way B550 Mortar Comes at Rs 16k i.e 210 at the same price of ASROCK X570 Phantom gaming 4 (same as ASROCK X570 Pro 4)

I think it's a good idea to expand the list as long as the MOBO is recommended. If you remove good MOBOs from the list for being too similar to one another, you might inadvertently limit our choices. Remember, B550 MOBO availability is a huge problem right now, and the ones which made the list may not be available, while those that would have made the list (if not for the excessive shortening) are the ones that are available.

I wish Buildzoid would do less theoretical reviews and more practical ones. An educated guess can only get you so far. I remember the Asus vs MSI review, where the comments escalated, and in the end it turns out that Asus was right and MSI had bad thermals. You can't know that only from reading specs. Anyway, good job and I hope he gets invited to one of the shops to test stuff for real.
