Does anyone have a video to onboard people into AMD naming? I have known my way around every other vendor with ease, and am a fairly technical user (overclock all the things, etc) and have some IT certs... But I never wrapped my head around AMD's terrible naming as of late. Zen, Zen3, Ryzen 1, Ryzen 2, Ryzen 3, Ryzen3000, the other ryzen 3, 5, 7, 9....... The list goes on. I feel like every time I look to see if AMD is offering something of value, they throw five more titan X Xp XP at you, but at least in that case, its top of the line hardware that anyone buying would know the difference, where as with AMD I just can never be sure, and it feels like if people werent willing to help explain it, it would just be easier to buy a competitor, because I just dont know what is current, what is old, what is high or what is low.
Generally the other vendors have kept this simple, though its getting to be a bit of a quagmire these days. Intel has X and Z chips, 3 5 7, where 5 is most people, 7 is enthusiest, 3 small budget, with 9 basically just coming in to shuffle the stack down a number, instead of just making a 1, because marketing. increment by thousands for new generation. NVidia has titan, 80, 70, 60 50... TI refresh basically shuffles the chips down one tier, 80ti is titan, 70ti is 80, etc, for when their confident they have sold the stock they will. helps drive revenue. okay. The odd whacky thing in there like a dual chip card, etc... increment by 100 per generation, now by 1000... because i guess marketing needs to convince people its a big leap and worth upgrading, despite it being iirc the fastest improving technology in the computing space, and thus the least nessisary of silly tactics that have consumers relearn your jargin.
AMD brings it back with things like multiple cards rebadged the new number, despite being the old card, and sharing a number, deceptively with letters added to denote it as a lesser card to presumable sell stocks.
Can somebody tell me what the hell is up with AMD's naming and marketing, and point me to a good source to onboard myself with all this? I know they are competitive again these days (yay, compitition!) but , I dont buy it, nor can I in good conscience help a friend with their hardware and reccommend it because I dont know what hardware does what with the whacky naming.

I run an overclocked system, ram and all, compensated for Vdroop, the whole thing. so its not like I just dont have the capacity to understand, I dont think. It seems like every time I come up with easy if this then that ruleset to understand their naming, they throw a bunch of new parts in that mix that up.

I really hope Steve sees this and can answer this question so I can either get started buying parts for my new gaming rig or wait. Is there going to be an X670 (or equivalent) board coming when the new Zen 3 desktop CPUs release, or is X570 going to stay as the top-of-the-line option for the remaining life of the AM4 socket? There has been almost ZERO information about the upcoming Zen 3 desktop CPUs and whether or not new mobos will release for these new CPUs. I really can't wait anymore to build a new gaming rig so I'd like to know if I can buy the X570 board I have selected along with a 3700X CPU to use until the Zen 3 desktop CPUs are released, which is when I will swap out the 3700X for either a 4900X or a 4950X (or whatever they end up calling them).
I don't mind spending 280 for a new CPU that I'm going to replace in two or three months because I'll save it as a backup CPU just in case (or maybe sell it, not sure), but I don't want to replace the mobo as well. That said, if something better like an all-new X670 board were to be released in two or three months, I'll feel compelled to upgrade to it and then I'll be really unhappy that I didn't just wait and ended up spending like 700 on a mobo and CPU that I only used for three months. Any info you guys may have would REALLY be appreciated...thanks!

I don't know.... Seems to me that even the cheapest B450 Motherboards are a Better Value option then these A520's Boards! Especially when you can get a Cheaper 1000 or 2000 series CPU and Still Upgrade in the future to a 3000 Series and Maybe even a 4000 series! Plus you still get overclocking support. Just stay under the 65w TDP and you shouldn't have any issues, even overclocking!
I mean maybe I'm missing something here, but to me A520 is DOA... IMO!

New build was sparked by your best airflow cases in 2020 video (and my trusted 2013 tower having more issues daily).

A second hand a320 board was all I could afford for my current PC. With a 3200g. I wish I could afford to be a more serious enthusiast like I once was. The second hand market in my country is awful, people often asking original RRP on used, 5 year old+ hardware.
I so appreciate AMD providing some somewhat feasible options for people like myself with ultra tight budgets.

PSA: I would define work users for the nerds who do not IT - We are handing users i7s running at 3ghz max boost. But they are mini desktops from HP with no active cooling so they realistically run at 2g most of the time. These users are happy with this performance... So AMDs weaksause x20 is really perfect for the market were AMD ever to break in.

My biggest problem with a320 was the quality of the boards, first gen boards were not good (i have a b350 and its a pain in the ass), not getting overclocking with 3rd gen doesnt really matters for gaming isnt a big deal ifs thats what you do, if you can save 50 bucks and get a 1660 super over a 1660 or a bigger ssd thats worth it for me

Depending on VRMs, A520 could be really good for ITX-boards. In SFF-builds you generally don't want a power hungry cpu anyway, and the boards don't support more than 2 ram slots anyway. I'd probably go for this over B450 for a price conscious SFF-build with like a 3600 or 3700X and something between a RX 5600 XT and 2070 Super.

Hey Steve, I have a content suggestion: Ultimate guide to USB spec naming and how we got into this mess . Would make for an interesting piece! I can't be the only one who keeps forgetting what all the numbers mean. And then there's the constant rebranding and varying nomenclature by different companies.
