You are missing many steps:
1) When you see the selection press e on keyboard(For editing). [ You will see a line after it ]
2) Replace quiet with -nomodeset xforcevesa- (without commas). [ Then press b for boot ]
3) Your android will boot correctly only one time. [ Android will start running ]
4) Now press (Alt + F1) to launch console.
5) Type : mkdir /mnt/sda
6) Type : mount /dev/block/sda1 /mnt/sda
7) Type : vi /mnt/sda/grub/menu.lst [ You can search use of vi on Google ]
8) Replace quiet with -nomodeset xforcevesa- (without commas).
9) Press Esc, and :wq
10) Type reboot.[ Your android will work fine ]

Fast forward now 2 years later and Android makes this video out of date already. Only after doing the work of downloading, burning to a disk, etc, you discover it won't grant file path permissions. It's like Android is taking surveys or wants the web page hits, but ultimately won't release the product. Why are they acting like elitist A-holes ? I wanted to do this because high resource, telemetry hungry Google makes Android a POS on a tiny tablet. I don't even want Android on my phone anymore now.

I tried installing android 8, but it got stuck at
Trusted GRUB now booting -Android-x86 8.1-r5--
Progress: ---Detecting Android-x86... found at /dev/sda1-

should I try the 32 bit version?
edit: a while ago, I found a tutorial that said to do the automatic setup, and it worked.

Actually going to use this to run an apk that I know contains malware. That way my I don't need to reset my device afterwards, and I can use a savestate with the VM.

You ever look at the sponsors of Android-x86? It's like a spam-fest. Not sure I trust them considering who they accept as sponsors. Very shady stuff.
