Nice. I wish that this had come out a month or two earlier. I have a couple of old Netgear NAS boxes, and they have served me well. At one time there were native apps for them, and I think they still will auto-save my non-protected TiVo shows, but I don't need that feature any more. Netgear stopped updating them, and neither Windows 10 or my Chromebook will mount their SMB shares, so all they're good for is doing backups using rsync. I got a new Netgear box, thinking I could just move the 4 x 3TB HDD array straight over, keeping the array intact. We'll see.
If one of these brands had an actual distro that wasn't just stuff like Plex that co$ts money I might be more interested.

I absolutely love how Synology offers their own self-hosted version of cloud services. I switched to Synology Drive when Dropbox set a device limit, and I switched to DS Note when Evernote set a device limit. They have Linux versions of the desktop software, as well as mobile. You can also replicate the whole Google Office suite. I used to have a monster 12 x 3TB FreeNAS build, downsized to a used Syno 416 Play, and now I don't need a NAS at all but I run the Syno off a single SSD just for the services. They are a little pricey but totally worth it.

I never install the app (yet another bloat) to find a DHCP enabled device on a private network. Access your (internet) router and find the device in the DHCP lease allocation table. Optional mark that device as an static entry i.e. always assign that device the same IPv4/IPv6 address. Saves one from setting up a local DNS/smb master/whatnot. Only drawback is the dependency on the ISP router and trust. Looking forward for the next setuo i.e. iSCSI.

I have the DS918+ I have the ds video instead of plex it's not as good but you can access it remotely for free so my mum can access it as well, I also have the ds audio and I just stream all my music to my phone and I use moments to automatically upload any photos I take, and use Drive so I can easly download or upload any files on my phone. Then on my workstation I just have all the shares mapped. Obviously I changed all the default ports

QUESTION: I know this is bassackward compared to what you did today.
How can I access movies & music stored on a Win7 box on my network? Evidently my google-fu was weak when it came to locating a solution to this problem.
Admittedly, I'm a total Linux noob. I have 2 old Core2Duo laptops that I've installed Mint on (since Win7 didn't run smoothly given RAM limitations).
Thanks in advance!

I have been using synology DS415play for 5 years and it is still running. if anyone would like to use synology for business, the plus(+) model is suggested because it has Synology's own Active Directory Server without spending boatload on Microsoft's licensing to manage.

Timing couldn't be better! Only this morning I was starting to look into remote connection of my 2-bay Synology from my Arch machine! Looking forward to the next videos. Can you include remote connection from an outside network options other than Quick Connect?

Static IP??? Where did you do this? I just see link aggregation. How on earth do you have Patreon supporters? You don't even have time markers in your videos. amateur stuff. I'll have to search for a better made static IP vid.

Great vid. Intersted in how you setup iSCSI. I am on manjaro. I can see the iSCSI drive in terminal but I cant use it in dolphin (running kde). Maybe I'm being dumb and I'm overlooking something... I wil see :)
