1.) What defines bloat? For me it was 2-3 unnecessary apps like Candy Crush and i removed it.
2.) Updates - I and i think most people are behind a laptop which they don't turn off or restart. We always use sleep functionality most of the times. So, unplanned or surprised updates don't bother me.
3.) Yes, there is telemetry and cortona, but I have never seen CPU hikes on my computer because of these processes. I don't use cortona and don't fiddle with their options because once it didn't allow me to change lockscreen wallpaper when i disabled telemetry. The message was 'Some settings are controled by your organization'
4.)And believe me, I have been on recent linux distros - ubuntu 19.04, deepin, manjaro, fedora . Nothing comes closer to Windows in battery efficiency. I used same browser Brave on linux and windows, linux always dies out first. And Yes, I am talking after applying the recommended TLP and Powertop tunables.
5.)I have also noticed that despite so many processes in the background in windows(180-190) when i leave it idle, it consumes less CPU than linux counterparts. Are windows drivers (not just gaming) more optimized, probably yes.
6.) And not to forget choppy touchpad experience on Linux(Windows Precision Touchpad drivers are bliss).
Microsoft also seems to have done something with their text/pixel rendering. Whenever I come back on Windows, it always looks so crisp and clear. I have tried many things on Linux but never got to the point where my display on Linux looked comparable to Windows.
7.) Paid Windows. Never. You're smart enough to search. ;p And no, my system is not infected and neither it has become a bot for the hacker whose script i utilized to activate windows.
I always get tempted to try new Linux distro but have realized that they all are the same except the versions of the packages in their repo, DE and package manager. Nobody in Linux Desktop space is bothered about refining the experience on laptop. And did you read the stackoverflow survey on what developers prefer to use. It was Windows on top even though some of them were developing for Linux/Server. That says a lot.

Let me just say this. Your gripe about Win10 updates is a little flimsy. -Yes-, people should be able to defer an update to a different time, but not indefinitely. I set my -off- hours from 11 pm to 7 am. When I-m done for the night, it starts the update process and it-s usually done by the time I-m ready for bed. Win10, Like Apple-s MacOS, is an evolving product that requires the updates. And let-s be honest here, most Linux users run Sudo Apt Update at least once a day, if not once a week. If someone were to NOT update their Linux distro, but once a month ( or every 6 months), the whole system would be borked. And you know that to be TRUE. As for bloat, -yes-, back in 2015 and 2016 I was getting games, like Candy Crush, pushed down to me, but that has stopped.
Chris, when I hear some complain about Windows and say they-re movin- to Linux, it tells me something very important about that person. They were never using a computer to do anything important. Do you see graphic artists, like my wife, switching to Linux? Nope. Publishers? Nope. Photographers? Nope. Accountants or business professionals? Nope. Outside of Blender, Linux has no commercial grade software available for it. None. It-s all a bunch Open Source Shareware. There is no incentive to move to desktop Linux. Stop and think about it. Do you think Macs would be as popular as they are if those software vendors hadn-t ported their applications to the Mac? NOPE. Apple would have gone under long before the iPhone was ever unveiled. MS Windows, as a whole, runs the desktops of one and a half BILLION computers around the world -. People don-t turn their computers on to run an operating system. They turn them on to run applications.

I've touched upon some linux distros and being an avid windows user , I'd definitely agree with what Chris has to say. Microsoft has lost focus and god, I miss the good old days where it used to be solid operating system that stayed out your way but seems like they have totally shifted their direction towards aesthetics and other bullcrap. Whereas linux has come a long way and a long, long way. Gaming on Linux ? Nobody ever thought about it before. What I believe is linux needs a lot of support and an awareness needs to be spread out that windows definitely, definitely has better alternatives (eyes closed). I've seen people and have personally felt this that ugh, libre office what is this? Where is microsoft office? Now this problem of familiarity is there and I think this can be overcome. Libreoffice has been developed a lot. And oh, older machines? Definitely linux. Oh, security? Definitely linux. And also that since linux is open source, it is now like an ocean . Literally an ocean of distributions and environments which is according to me and also many people, is a problem for people who are just making the shift to Linux. Anyways, I appreciate what Chris said and again, thanks for spreading awareness via videos like these.

I switched to Linux back in 2012 and have since moved from Ubuntu to MINT, to plain Debian. I'm on D-10 at this time.
I have managed a few converts since I switched out. Generally these have started where an alternate or un-used box is available. I like to start folks on MINT/LMDE3 right now. By loading Linux onto an alternate or un-used box the client can move at his/her own speed. It doesn't take long though: as the client adapts to the Linux system reverting onto a Windows 8 or W-10 system become more and more repulsive.
For Windows apps today I run Oracle/Virtual box. This is less than ideal but, as we have noted: there's a few programs here and there that we just don't have .deb packages for, ...

I'm OK with add ware like Candy Crush on a fresh install, I get rid of it once. What I can't abide is why it keeps installing extra bloat at each update. Even stuff I've previously uninstalled comes back.
As to the updates happening at random times ... uhh ... I always get told to adjust my settings. Yep, done that, still goes and restarts right in the middle of me working. After I've just rebooted the machine, I've even run into scenarios where it simply force-shut-downs without asking to save your current work, to then boot into the -Please don't turn off, updates installing- screen - thank you, just lost hours worth of work due to this.

Not agree on everything. I am a Windows user since version 1.01. Every new windows version became better. Version 3.11 was really good, Then Windows 98se and later Windows XP, best windows ever. tweakable and fast. Windows Vista and seven were horrible, Never use them privately. Windows 8.1 was the next good windows, still use it, and supported till 2024. I agree full with Chris about Windows10. Microsoft made indeed a big mistake. but I seem to works commercially . Like Apple. No innovations, the same or worse for more money. Although I use Linux for over 20 years, never for a desktop, only without a gui for server and IOT. I will give it a try.

MS don't have a future for personal users unless they wake up, but tbh I don't think they care anymore. I think they are moving towards corprate users to pay their subscription licence fees with glee. I have always love Windows, but S10 sucks. The design; some may like it but for me it looks 2d and not sure why they would do this when screens have such higher resolutions they could make really nice looking 3d icons etc, the glitches after updates, the crappy 'Store' that I have prbably only downloaded 5 apps from since I bought this computer in 2018. W10 just feels like a constant mistake in progress rather than a finished retail product.

I tried to switch to Linux (Mint Cinnamon) recently after watching your videos and others. I wanted it to work but couldn't do it. OpenOffice wouldn't work with my PowerPoint files without reformatting all of them. I couldn't watch Hulu and something else. Back to Windows 10. I share your frustrations and concerns with Windows 10. We need software companies to come out with quality Linux applications equal to Microsoft Office to take it to the next level. I hope it happens and Microsoft gets a serious competitor. Despite its issues and frustrations, Windows 10 works pretty well for me overall.

First BEST Windows ever was Windows 98SE and then it was again Windows XP SP3 and then it was AGAIN Windows 7 SP1 and then it stopped there. I am not sorry Microsoft to point this out. You always hate your users, always going your ways which are not our ways so... you want love? work for it! you will not have mine since your crap is still expensive, going in the wrong direction and IT IS DISRUPTING! You hate us? We hate you right back and more! Actually Linux is pretty decent and good looking and lots of games are working and IS FREE!

Every time I use Windows 10 I just remember why I switched to Linux because Windows 10 is not only annoying but it gets worse and worse for hardware that isn-t a big desktop pc or a really new laptop. I hate seeing computers freezing for 10 minutes straight when a simple usb stick could just fix it. Windows 10 is good but I want to be able to use my computer and I don-t want to have to upgrade my computer more regularly than I have to upgrade my operating system.
