Hey Distrohuggers,
I can finally breath a sigh of relief and sleep like a baby tonight. My install of OpenSUSE Tumbleweed finally updated. OPST now has the 4. 19. 12 kernel ( which some people are already complaining about. Along with all kinds of tiny package updates to Firefox, Chromium, LibreOffice, Inkscape, KDE Applications. There appeared to be some kind of major X11 update, and the latest Vulkan driver. Yast2, the graphical control center got a major tweak, and some tweaks to the bootloader and plymouth. I did not yet see anything visible that stuck out at me. I think it is still on systemd 239, which may be a good thing. I can only guess it will be early February, before I have the 4. 20. 1 kernel.
I have been testing a cloud-based fax application called XenFax ( www. xenfax. com. Unfortunately, I do not think I am going to get it to work with OpenSUSE. I may stick one of my SSD's in the computer containing a debian-based distro and see if that helps. XenFax seems to work fine in Android, and appeared to work okay on my kid's Chromebook 15. Why would a cloud-based application not be fully functional in OpenSUSE?

why do people insist on advertising crap like warzone 2100 and xonotic? dont get me wrong warzone was amazing when it was released 20 years ago and i played it alot, but is there no newer games with more features and better graphics on linux. xonotic is a clone of a clone of a clone of unreal tournament. its not even funny anymore.
Q: -whats this game- - xonotic
A: -its a clone of unreal tournament-
Q: -ok whats this game? - Sauerbraten
A: -its another clone of unreal tournament-
Q: -and what about this game- - Warzone2100
A: it was released 20 years ago, then about 12 - 15 years ago they release the source code for it so people decided it would be better to spend time on making mods and updates for a 20 year old game instead of working on something new
Q: -what is this one that looks like kart racing- - Tux Kart
A: its a clone of super mario kart from S-Nes
Q: is there any games i can play that are not a remake/clone of another older game?
A: not really, unless you have steam
Q: what if my internet is intermittent and i can only be online for 20 mins at a time?
A: download more ram! 1

With Windows 10, this whole problem could be fixed easily by offering long term snapshots and they do, just not to the general public. & gigs might not seem like a lot today, but if your running Windows 10 on a 128gb ssd, that SSD is going to fill up pretty fast. Just look at the HP stream. As painful as that device is out of box, it's another good example. 7 gigs free isn't simply there to start with. Windows 10 has this uncanny habit of growing in size as it is, let alone reserving additional space. This isnt a fix. It's simply a bandaid to a much bigger problem. It's as if the bad joke in the room got taken seriously.

MS does engage in targeted attacks upon Linux and Unix. In the 1990's I was a MS OEM Builder. I was offered a BOUNTY by a MS Regional VP if I directed them toward my Clients that were Running Linux on their Business Machines. At the Time I had some LARGE entities that did indeed run some version of Unix /Linux in their Commercial Business some were in the health Care Field as well. Needless to say I did NOT Cash In on this type of Dirty Operation. I stayed Loyal to my Clients. BUT I will tell you MANY OEM's did indeed CASH IN on these type of offers

The problem with gaming on Linux is two-fold and hard to solve. Companies don't want to port games because the user base isn't large enough. Gamers don't want to go to Linux because there are not enough AAA games ported to it. It's at the endless stalemate and Wine doesn't help. Several developers have said they won't port their game to Linux because it works with Wine.

For privacy, I compartmentalize my browsers into VMs based on the level of privacy needed. For example, one is just for google stuff. So google only knows about what I do on their platform. No more. It would be really nice if there was a browser, or browser extention that did something similar to this to make it easier for the average person to surf the web more securely.

Windows needs 7GB of reserve storage and can take very long to install all the updates.
Meanwhile on linux we fit an entire desktop including office suite on a 2gb usb stick and the updates don't waste space as they replace the files.
Microsoft really needs to completely revamp the way they patch.

im very dissapointed that JAI is not open sourced, i liked the features he added, many of them are unique, and well i can agree that linux does have big problem with it, im not into it but i do stand to say linux desktop is unusable (even tho im using it right now)
reply

What's the news about the first one? Windows already reserves 100GB on my machine to prevent big updates from failing
It's a simple fix that makes my computer boot into linux

reply

If Jonathan Blow is saying that Windows and Linux are unusable ATM, why doesn't he lead an effort to write an OS in Jai so that he can make a usable OS? Just saying.
