Playing with the Pinephone (Linux! Computer? Or Phone? - Rob Braxman Tech We will experiment with my Pinephone and see what we can do with this at this early stage. We will test wifi, LTE, SSH, Copying to eMMC flash storage, sound test, load desktop apps, test desktop apps, create a development environment for C. Write a short C program. Using Phosh with PostmarketOS for this exercise. While we wait for the Mobile UI's to be finished, we're going to play and let Ubuntu Touch, Phosh, LuneOS, Plasma Mobile, Maemo Leste, Sailfish, Nemo all get a chance to get developed. This play time will not spend too much time on the UI's or focusing on their bugs but to see what we know we can do on the device so far. Although some have made a phone call, and used SMS, I have not tried that and have not researched the procedures since it is not part of the UI yet. I also have not found current instructions for the camera

Even at the time of this update--at the time of this writing--February 2021--GNU/Linux on an actual - tablet - of much of - any - type--pine-based, RPi-based, x86-based, etc, JUST ISN'T READY.
WHY?
Because: 1) touch-screen functionality--even with Plasma or Gnome3--is - buggy -, necessitating the carrying of a keyboard anyhow.
2) while GUIs are pretty far along (KDE-Plasma, Gnome, MATE, et al, the - applications - are still largely desktop-oriented. So their window-size doesn't fit right, and they may not respond to touch commands.
Many of GNU/Linux's 15, 000 + graphical apps would need serious recoding.
3) A HUGE NUMBER OF TABLET MODELS OF ANY SORT (ARM, x86, etc) LACK A WORKING USB AND/OR WORKING OTG.
At the time of writing, one is better
off just going with a lightweight
notebook computer where comes to
running GNU/Linux.

How Complicated, why do I want to Write Programs, as a Smart Dude as yourself, sure No Problem, you came OUT with allot more Neurons Working in That Head of Yours, Let me see, Like Einstein, just go ahead and show us your Programs you have in that Head. For the Rest of us, I don't think so. Yes I want a secure Phone, on my Vacations, I use my Phone for Navigation, yes, I'm a small town Person, who lives in a Small Town, when I Travel, as this Famous Movie can Explain, Restless in Seattle, Watch it, if you Haven't, It's a Classic. I'm Fearing No More Classics, Rob, thats Gone, I see Socialism trying Its best to become Reality, More Control, as your Discovering and Telling US. Your Two Phones, Awesome, I want, what I don't want is to Learn Programing, Excellent Video.

I really like your videos. I-m sure you-re aware Linux is only a kernel so Android is as real a Linux as are the desktop/laptop distributions. Some refer to the Linux Unix-like distributions as GNU/Linux, while not entirely accurate still makes much more sense than -real Linux. - The other comment I would like to make is, if it-s all about the security, why so big on Linux distros over OpenBSD? I would think you would be all about figuring ways to make OpenBSD more useful to more people. It would be hard to argue that Linux is anywhere as near as secure as OpenBSD. Yes, OpenBSD is not as -cool- as Linux, but still. Jeepers.

Linux phones have many years in development to be able to come anywhere near close to Android or iOS. unless, an investor[s] brings in a very large team (100s, 1000s) of dedicated (paid) people to develop GUI interfacing to do what you did in syntax to accomplish the same tasks and have the look and feel of what Google and Apple have accomplished.

I feel like the only kindergartner at this university. I am oddly drawn to the material though and am in awe of this expertise. Okay. I haven't seen the whole video yet, but I need to see more videos get one thing out of the way before they focus on everything else. Do the cellular voice calls work? I still don't know! And I've watched several videos about this phone! I know it runs linux. Does the damn phone make calls.

I'm sure phone companies already knew this, they just couldn't release the phones out in public to replace PC.
But here we have a very good man showing us that 2020 linux smartphones are powerful. Thank you.
