I use Barrier to connect my mouse/keyboard to both my Windows (boo/hiss) and Ubuntu machines. Didn't work very well with one of the devices on wifi, but when both wired, it's as smooth as having a second monitor. The only issue I still have is that I can't trigger the hot corners on the Ubuntu client. They work fine if I plug a mouse in, but not with the shared one.

For me I just SSH into the box I need access to or if I need to I have a USB Hub that I pull and plug into the machine I need, it has both of the Wireless USB nubs plugged into the hub for keyboard and mouse so that way I am only using one keyboard and one mouse. It works for me so yah.

You can also do this with synergy-core. The open source version of synergy and it also works on windows and mac. You can share between Linux, windows and mac at the same time if that is your sort of thing. I use it between two arch machines.

Really liking this. Synergy keeps giving weird behaviour when running Virtualbox VM's, where the cursor never crosses over to the other PC because it is in the Virtualbox screen. But this is just working

That's pretty damn crazy. I use switchers for that, and for one of my monitors. Inconvenient for laptops, though, because I still have no plug in the cables.

You can also get a USB switcher device, and you have to press a button and you can switch your keyboard and mouse that way. You need a couple usb-usb cables too

Something that doesn't have an active maintainer is ok, UNLESS if it is anything web or networking related that may expose you to security vulnerabilities.
