I got a NOKIA for the same reasons you got the Samsung... and I LOVE IT... does everything my sis' IPHONE does- BETTER.. and only cost me $200.... I'd like to convert it to LINUX though- but don't think I can.. OH_ you just said - I use phones to make phone calls-... ha-- MY WORDS EXACTLY-- I use my phone to TALK to others-- OR very rarely a picture... I'm still only learning to use the blooming thing- cause I'm NOT a phone person either.. I just don't understand the fascination. I had an old SAMSUNG RUGBY 4 FLIP PHONE til about 2 months ago.. loved it-- tough as nails- I'd dropped it off the roof of the building where I worked and it landed on concrete and bounced into the pool--- took me 15 minl. to get down and get it-- and it still worked perfectly!!

Regarding emacs violating the Unix philosophy... who cares if it does? Our smart phones do a hundred things other than being a phone, and no one asks this question about them. A smart phone is basically a computer that implements a lot of analog functionality in the digital domain. And it does it fabulously. Just because one don't use the programming functionality directly doesn't mean it isn't a computer with built-in peripherals. Similarly, saying emacs is just an elisp interpreter is just being pedantic. Saying emacs is a bloated editor is just as silly as saying your Android is a bloated telephone and therefore no good because it violates a philosophy that's irrelevant to it on the scale with which 99.999% of people use it.

The best way I've ever heard it described is as follows: Bald is a choice. Balding is a condition. You're bald by choice, not a condition.
So far as BURNOUT goes, it's not like what you think. The actual condition feels like some circuit in the brain, just doesn't work anymore. There is no remedy, except time, that I'm aware of. In minor cases it takes months to recover. Mine took years. All the other things not requiring that part of the brain work fine, but until new pathways are created, you're as a diminished capacity. That was my experience. In case you're wondering, it's not the same as as stroke. There's no paralysis, memory functions well, no widespread effects.

3:49 I think people don-t comprehend what the -Unix philosophy- is. You know the old saying, that a half-truth can often be worse than a total lie? Well, -do one thing and do it well- is one of those half-truths. The small pieces that implement this idea only work because they are built on top of much bigger pieces that do many things: look at the shell itself (whichever one you use), the Linux kernel, the glibc library, the X server, systemd ... each of these is a large piece of code that does many useful things, and does them very well. You would have a very poor platform stack indeed, if you tried to do without them.

It's fine as far as it goes if you want to type MISSISSIPPI instead of MS.!!!!! Whatever you like- I may QUESTION you on stuff-- but it's NOT to critique you- it's to LEARN.. because I know you're farther along on your linux journey than I am... (and lots of folks on here have really -lit into- me over some comments- because they see them as negative critique-- but it's NOT)... :) GREAT VIDEOS AS USUAL.

Don't you backpedal on your position on whether emacs violates Unix philosophy?
Here you say it doesn't but in another video where you defend vim you kinda say it does.
My own take is that emacs definitely does violate Unix philosophy, but that isn't a good reason to abandon it.
The editor which sticks to Unix philosophy is sed, not Vim.

While I have had a cell phone since the mid '90's, I didn't get a smart phone until 2015. And while DT says a $200-300 phone is -cheap-, those are the most expensive phones I have bought, and my Moto X Developer Edition lasted more than 4 years before my cats helped kill the battery by unplugging the charger.

7:05 Only tangentially related, I was reminded of an item by the late Robin Williams I saw a little while back, commenting on Michael Jackson-s addiction to propofol. He said -taking propofol because you can-t sleep is like taking chemo because you-re tired of shaving your head-.
